As some of you know, David Williams and I have been working on a hop patch at a friend’s place near Charleston, IL. Admittedly, much of my involvement up to this point has consisted of sitting in the shade drinking beer or fishing with my friends while David toiled away, but at times in between naps I have pitched in and lent a hand as I am doing now. Anyway, we wanted to see if any club members would be interested in coming down later this summer(late August) to help harvest and share in what should be the best crop yet, and have some fun and good food as well.
Many of the details are still being worked out, and will also depend on the amount of people interested. Here are the highlights of what we are currently envisioning, provided there is a decent crop:
· Helping with on-site harvesting, drying and packaging of hops. In exchange, you will have the option of taking home a proportionate share of the crop(after a reasonable skim off the top by the proprietors of course). Current hops are Cascade, Centennial, Nugget, Chinook and Columbus.
· Making of a collaborative “Wet-Hop” beer to be brewed on-site and put on tap at the brewhouse.
· Making of another larger-batch collaborative “Fresh Hop” beer from freshly dried hops on-site, to be split between the brewhouse and part of the batch given back to the Balls.
· Camping on-site at the Ball Farm with a great pond for fishing and swimming.
· A jockey-box for anyone who wants to bring and share kegged homebrew.
· A Bragging Rights meat smoking contest by the owner and a friend for which we will all be the judges.
· If enough interest, constructing of a new plot where members can put in a couple of their own plants for next year’s harvest. Note: This would require some time commitment in the Spring/Summer for maintenance, and space may be limited.
The cost will depend on the number of people, but should be very minimal(probably $25 or so), and would go to the cost of equipment, ingredients and food. The location for those unfamiliar is about a 3-hour drive straight south on I-57. We can certainly arrange some car-pooling and we can also arrange to pick people up at the Amtrak station in Mattoon(my hometown) which is only a few miles away and is a cheap option for you pedalers who can't fit in somebody's car.
If you think you would be interested, please reply to this post and we will provide more details as we get closer.
Thanks,
Rich
Count me in!...
I'm interested, depending on the date....
I am interested but really need to know the date ahead of time to ask off at work but also cause I got some vacationing to do in late july. Can me and allison ride down with you and katherine?

All based on dates it sounds fantastic!
It's a little difficult to absolutely nail down a date just yet. Have to see how they are progressing in late July. Unfortunately, mother nature does not answer to me, they are ready when they are ready. We are planning the last weekend in August, but I will certainly firm the date up before the end of July.
Daniel - you are going, no excuses, and yes you can ride with us.
I am in...hope mother nature decides on middle to late August.

Sounds like there is plenty of interest, so it's on. I'll update on progress over the next couple months and post more details as they firm up.
I am in as well.
Sounds great depending on the date.
The Dates set for this, September 7-8th. Dave and I were down this weekend to check on the hops and had to pick a good amount of hops which were ready, but there should be as many and probably more ready in a few weeks. The plan is pretty much the same:
I will post up some directions. Hit me up with any questions. Hope you can make it!
We will see if we could make it looks fun. Still doing smoked meat competition.
Jen and I are a definite. Who needs. A ride? We will be heading down Friday night and hanging out on the other side of the county in Kansas at Nowhere Bar... Then we will head over to the Balls around 9 on Saturday.
I'm interested in going, but would require a ride.

I'm in. Is there an event posted ?
No, I did not post anywhere but here. Go for it.
Nevermind - I figured it out, sorta.
Here is the Google Maps Directions: http://goo.gl/maps/PVbEs
Basically, you take I-57 South for until you get to the exits for Charleston, IL. This will put you on Rte 16 East. Continue on for approx 3 miles. You will pass a Hospital on your left. The road(Old State Road), is the second left past the hospital. The is a small bridge that is currently under construction, but hopefully will be done by then. The Balls place is about half a mile down this road on the left. We will put a sign out or something. Anybody gets lost call my cell 773-720-0049.
Canuck ya can ride down with jen and me. We have room for one more! Be warned we are heading to our friends janet and Tiny's place just outside of Kansas Friday night!
Thanks Chuck. I'll take ya up on that offer.

And just to clarify for Bill, "just outside of Kansas" = middle of nowhere.
As long as there are no dueling banjos, I'm good.
The emperor is not as forgiving as i am
I'll make sure we get dueling banjos!
And yes it is the middle of nowhere hence the name Nowhere Bar!
But this aint no sanctified joint, dis here is a bonified private redneck hooch shack!
HEY! I'm from WV. Dueling Banjo's is an awesome piece of music with real artistic qualities!
There's a fuck you acompanied by a banjo here somewhere... :-)
Oh... my... god. Why haven't we done this? http://thechive.com/2013/09/17/guys-rig-up-buddies-plumbing-with-beer-wh...
Hopefully everyone is still on for this weekend! Daniel and I are heading down Friday around 4pm. If anyone wants to come down Friday night and camp out, they are more than welcome, but otherwise we will see you on Saturday morning. If anyone is camping and needs a tent or anything, just let me know.
Food - We've got beef brisket and pulled pork on the smokers and will be grilling brats and anything else that others want to bring. Feel free to bring anything you want to share, chips, desserts, jello salad, your secret recipe BBQ sauce.
Questions, let me know.
For those of you coming down for this, my Girlfriend's Mom's farm has 5 apple trees that went nuts this year.
Tons of Golden and Red delicious apples free for the picking.
The farm is about 20 minutes from where we will be at Riche's.
Let me know and we can all swing by before we head back to Chicago on Sunday...
Also, it probably goes without saying, but bring a comfy camp chair if you have one. There should be plenty of time for sitting.
If anyone has a small digital scale scale for weighing hops in ounces they can bring, that would be appreciated.
