I will be at there around 1600hrs. The best I could do is put everything up off the ground on brew tables or bar. Other then that all orders should be picked up today shopuld they not.
I thought we had solved this protocol problem last time.
Receipt should be posted when the order is delivered and you have 24 hours until the grain is binned. Until we include a real protocol and fallout, people will continue to be lazy and continue to contribute to the rat problem.
I will purchase more rat traps tomorrow after work. Grain will be thrown out whenever I get to the clubhouse.
I put in the request for group buy thread the delivery date would be this weekend, but I could have added it to this post as well. Will do in the future. In general, the buy will close Tuesday and be delivered Friday morning.
Yeah, sorry about that. I couldn't remember if I ordered pilsner or pale, so as it was at the end of the pickup window, i just took the (slightly) better stuff. I have it at my storage, so we can make exchange anytime.
I laid down fresh traps yesterday, but with the grain gone, I improvised by rolling some Golden Promise into the peanut butter bait. Maybe the rats will smell the grains and their conditioning will draw them out.
Not sure if this has ever been brought up but what about having cat in the brew house? My sister told me about the Tree House Humane Society having a 'Cats Work" program, where a feral cat (two minimal per site) is placed in a location and allowed to hunt mice and other vermon.
The immediate draw back is that the cats would have to be feed by the brew club and a living shelter maintained. Not to mention that some members may be allergic to cats but I thought it would bring it up since I have seen some breweries using cats to keep mice/rats away from their grain.
The fact that people are allergic to cats makes this idea undoable from the get go. Also the fact that there's no way to make sure the cat stays in the brew house and that cats fuck with stuff reinforce how this won't work.
I don't even like cats and think that is a shitty thing to do to a cat. Locking an animal in the brewhouse and hoping it fends for itself is just going to add a dead cat to our problems. Besides, a cat might go after mice, but I doubt they would do anything about the rats.
Empirical Brewery uses them. Read the article. It's pretty interesting. And the cats are being euthanized if they don't get adopted. With the upstairs space now the cats would have a tone of space to hang. If it worked at this brewery I bet it would work for us. I would be up for looking into it if we are serious about this option. Putting the litter box upstairs away from equipment ect.
The article suggests that rats are driven away by the scent of the cat. Instead of getting a cat, would it suffice to just strategically distribute small containers of used kitty litter around the brewhouse?
Hey Mark, we should take this opportunity to refine the protocol for group buy.
Based on the past, the problems with group buys have been that people forget what they buy, and aren't given the lead time necessary to make arrangements for the grain.
This time, is there any way that we can set a close date, order date, delivery date, and pickup window? Also, a copy of the invoice should be present so nobody takes the wrong sack of grain.
Thanks!
Will be delivered today by 9 AM.
I can pick my bag up tonight, but what's the plan for keeping rodentia at bay from the giant buffet?

Well - Honestly we don't have a great rodent plan. So I'd get over there before Chompy takes his cut.
Well, here's hoping he doesn't get to it before tonight!

Like a Brazialian steak house with the coin flipped to green all night long!
All was well at 9:30 pm when I picked up my bag.

All grain is on the bar or on a bar chair and should be picked up no later then tomorrow 09/17/16. Splinter knows how to climb.

Once again thanks Bill!
Thanks, Bill!! I'm stopping by this morning on my way to Riot Fest.
The bag of Red X has been compromised. It's a pretty small hole, but whoever bought this needs to take care of it today.

Yes the bag of Red X has been comprimised. There are still 3 bags of grain that still need to be picked up.

yikes! I will be there super early to collect. I forgot that I got in on this buy.
There's also a bag of Breiss "Brewers Malt" that hadn't been claimed as of 5 pm Sunday afternoon.

More notice, like a day or two beforehand at least, would be helpful. Not everyone reads the forums everyday.
Managing the list would be another approach - contacting people directly regarding the delivery.

Say, I seem to be missing a sack of Canadian Pislner malt from this buy. Has anyone seen it?
I think Sean put it in buckets yesterday afternoon, he must have thought it was his. You might send him a PM or call him.

I didn't take any other sack, I think that there is a bag of briess brewers malt on the bar. I am not sure if that is the one you ordered though.
I guess it's mine by default. So I transferred your Pilsner to 3 orange buckets and tucked them next to station 1for whenever you can get it
Thanks Sean!
is all the grain from the buy picked up now? I saw hella rats friday night when I moved a fermenter into the walk in.
for those unfamiliar with the term, 'hella rats' is probably 3-4 separate ones
Yes, it has been. Do we know of any places where there are actuall rat burrows? I saw something about using dry ice to put them to sleep....
I saw the dry ice thing, too, and was going to bring that up!!!
I laid down fresh traps yesterday, but with the grain gone, I improvised by rolling some Golden Promise into the peanut butter bait. Maybe the rats will smell the grains and their conditioning will draw them out.
To catch the rat, I have to be the rat.
On Friday night I saw one go in and out of the open site drain by the ferm room
I just got a bunch of traps for home. I'll bring some next time I'm at the BH.
The drain has been closed with duct tape (this caps all the other drains) and the hole to Reed has been bricked.
Bring the fight to them!

Americo, I have pushed for a brewhouse cat for years and everyone crys that it is to much responsabilty...
I fully support a cat, even on a trial basis for a week or two.

Just to be clear you still feed the cat.....well fed cats make equally good if not better hunters.

Before we resort to using the litter, maybe we should assess the effectiveness of the hole plugging?
unless... there is a hypoallergenic cat!
You're talking about a place where people are there every day to feed and take care of it, that is not our situation.
Icehouse - You want to trade rat shit for cat shit? I don't know if that's step in the right direction dude, pun intended.
Oh, and are we having an October Group Buy? I completely missed this until all the rat talk must have bumped it up today.
I'll open a new group buy.

can we have a serious conversation about communal brew snakes? I think this would be a lot more favorable than a cat.
