email from goose island:
Ladies and gents,
As promised, we have another batch of barrels available.
This time we have 15. Barrels are 53 gallons, Heaven Hill 9-12yrs old, previously used for Bourbon County Brand Stout.
They need to be picked up on Tuesday, February 28th from 2pm-7pm.
Because of the small number of barrels available this is how we’ll work the sale, the first 15 people to do the following will get a barrel:
email me (chelsea@gooseisland.com) - so I can start the list
fill out the attached form
bring it down to the Fulton Brewery (1800 W Fulton) with a check for your barrel (written out to FSB) $30 by Monday (at 3pm
limit one per person
schedule a time to pick up your barrel on Tuesday
Feel free to share this information with your friends. This email list was created by merging information of all of you who purchased a barrel in December, and those of you who were on the waiting list. John Laffler, Tom Korder and I will tweet when they are sold out (@jalaffler @tomkorder @brookago)
Cheers!
Chelsea
P.S. If you have a barrel from December, we’d love to know what you’ve done with it! Did you age beer? We’d love to try it. Are you still aging it? Perhaps a family reunion of sorts will be in order when your beers are ready? Email chelsea@gooseisland.com with your barrel story.
I 100% agree with Thomas. Theres no reason GI shouldn't be let in on our awesome barrel program and who knows maybe they will want to come to one of our events and give us some publicity. I did reply to that email to let the lady from GI know about our barrels so far and what was going in them but didn't get a response back. Maybe something more formal with pictures would peak their interest.
We really need to take a picture (a good picture with a good camera) of all 8 barrels together and send that in to Goose with what we have filled them all with. I know the email they sent out encourages this but I feel like a brew club using eight bourbon barrels will get great publicity and who knows, maybe Goose will bring beer and sponsor an event at our space when we crack some of the barrels in a year.
So where are you suggesting they go? Where the shelves are by the office? Or back in the corner by the burners? My concern is that we are getting ahead of ourselves with too many barrels.
so, even without bill's barrel, we still have a potential three that will be stored at the brewhouse once they've been brewed for. I'm still looking to get a wine barrel and hopefully it could fill that empty spot.
We spoke with one of the brewers today when we picked the barrels up (we got to meet Mr. Saberniak and help him load your barrels Kevin!), and he was open to selling us more racks, but he let us know that he's only selling racks with which he has doubts concerning their structural integrity. So, while a rack he sells us might be ok for stacking two on top of another two, he advised against stacking them three high.
I'd highly suggest that we purchase two more racks for the new 4 barrels. They're still only 15 each. Can the club pay for them? They told Bill to email if we wanted them. The guy said he'd be available at noon tomorrow if we wanted them.
The shelving against the office-side wall will soon be removed for the ferm room and I think we should really consider getting rid of/selling/giving back two of the stoves that we own. I don't know why we would ever need more than one. That would help consolidate space.
Also, just a further encouragement for anyone who bought a barrel to start thinking of what they want to do with them. Kevin, I think the group vote sounds like a great idea. Maybe you should start some kind of thread? The brewer said they purged the barrels with co2 so I think if we started brewing for some of them we might be able to avoid cleaning them out.
did we get racks? where are we gonna store them?
...igz...
I just acquired 2 barrels. I am going to store them at my house until i figure out what I want to fill them with. Both will be dedicated to chaos group brews. Once we are ready to fill them I will bring them to the brew house. One idea I had for 1 one of the barrels is a chaos group vote on what should go inside. Might be kind of fun and interesting. Let me know what you guys think.

Those racks were only $15 such a steal. You have to ask for them tho.
eric, I'd be in for a lambic but whiskey barrels are poor carriers of bugs because of the chair on the inside. Brett needs porous wood to live in and I think char isn't as hospitable. You could get it uncharred but that costs money since it involves disassembly and reassembly. Also, I'm not so sure how sweet stout and bourbon char would work in a lambic. For a lambic we're going to look to brewing it first and then sourcing a fresh wine barrel after all the beer is ready. If you want to experiment with the whiskey lambic, though, take a shot!
How much were those barrel racks last time? We should look into buying one so that we can store more barrels on top of the current ones. I think now that we have the pump it's a viable option. Of course, I'm assuming that Eric and Kevin will want the barrels at the brew house ;). If not, that's cool too.
I'd be up for it. Anyone interested in trying a lambic?
either of you guys wanting to keep it at brewhouse and do a chaos group brew? If so, try and whip up a recipe quick so we can get brewing on it. If we get them done fast enough maybe we can avoid washing them.
I am also trying to get a barrel and got the same email you did. I am unable to drop the money off by 5pm today since I work night shift. I am, however, able to pick the barrels up tomorrow. Would you be willing to spot me the 30 bucks today and I will pick up the 2 barrels tomorrow? Let me know what you think as soon a possible. My number is 219-616-4558.

Looks like I just have to drop off the money today...I might be good for today.
I have a meeting after school tomorrow and won't be home until after 10pm. Can anyone pick up for me tomorrow?
