Hoptacular Scoresheet

Here are the score card results from the judges at beer hoptacular:

Steve Kemp, BJCP Certified:

Aroma 8/12

Smokey phenolic - some malt hops ok.

Appearance 3/3

Very little head.

Flavor 12/20

Nice smoke characgter, good malt with a fair amount of hops. Hops grow into a long bitter finish. Nice initial caramel.

Mouthfeel 4/5

Ok, but bitter to the point of astringency.

Overall Impression 7/10

For this style - malt should outshine hops. This is very bitter. Overall a nice beer. I love the smoke character.

Total 34/50

D. Norton, BJCP Master:

Aroma 9/12

Smoky, tart esters dominate. Hint of malt.

Appearance 2/3

Light golden amber color. Slight haze. Thin head.

Flavor 9/20

Smokey character comes through, but hops dominate. Malt background.

Mouthfeel 4/5

Medium bodied. Dry aftertaste.

Overall Impression 8/10

Overhopped, but drinkable effort.

Total 32/50

Joe Formanek, BJCP National:

Aroma 7/12

Assertive smokey [can't read]. Savory. A bit ham like.

Appearance 2/3

Great clarity, poor head, copper color.

Flavor 13/20

Assertive smokiness along with [can't read] A few hops. However the smoke character does help balance out the hops somewhat - more 2 dimensional.

Mouthfeel 4/5

Medium body [can't read] smoky [can't read] astringency

Overall Impression 7/10

Actually a nice [can't read]. Good smoke rate.

Total 33/50

Jerald O’Kennard

Aroma 11/12

Fun "Slim Jim" smoked meat aromas

Appearance 3/3

Hazy deep copper brown faint [can't read] head.

Flavor 15/20

Smoked nut and meat flavor follow w/grilled fruits and a deft tough of leafy green hops on the [end].

Mouthfeel 4/5

Chewy, lively well-carbonated refreshing and zesty hop astringency.

Overall Impression 8/10

A very nice hop forward, mildly smoked rauch that will be great with food.

Total 41/50

The average is in the Very Good range: Generally with style parameters, some minor flaws.

Scoresheet also came with "Beer for Dummies" flyer. Is that a message? :/

I was afraid we added to much

I was afraid we added to much hops at the end... The recipe I crafted called for only a half ounce at the end of boil and we threw in an ounce... Oh well we will get them next year!

Ya I picked mine fresh off

Ya I picked mine fresh off his bines and while I was there he said he thought they were Cascade, but when I asked him via email what they were again cause I forgot he said he thinks the Northern Brewer and Cascade plants were mixed together. So I think they are a mixed bag. I have them dried and in the freezer. Do to their lack of aromatics I will likely use them as a mild bittering hop.

I got hops from that same guy

I got hops from that same guy back in August. I remembered saying he didn't brew but his brother did. Have you brewed with them? The didn't smell particular aromatic as I dried them.
