New Brewhaus Cleanout Thread, (for planning times to clean).

If you're interested in devoting time to cleaning out the new space, please let me know your availability.  Also let me know if you've offered to volunteer some of your schedule so I don't cross any two meetings that a given person would want to go to both of.

We have permission from the landlord to clean this place up prior to paying rent for November 1st.  This is a golden opportunity to have the space open and ready.  Otherwise we'll be wasting our rent money for November 1st.

Iggi seems to think we need to rent out a dumpster.  Where will the money for this come from?  Are there alternatives?  Discuss.

I think the dumpster is

I think the dumpster is pending transit and Iggi won't know about the van until Friday morning.  The alternative is just using Dave's car but I don't know how effective that would be.  Is that too late to notify you?

Also, thanks to Thomas, Bill, and Dan McCarthy for coming out today to hang out/brew/clean things.  Dave got some good keezer work done (it's almost complete) and Iggi did a whole lot of cleaning.  I got 12 gallons of Saison!  It's a pleasure to see this place shape up.

My guess is that little kids that are into makeing forts and whatnot - go nuts over boxes like that.

If ya have them, we can prob fit them into iggi's van. If it is something you have to purchase, don't bother. I bought contractor bags the other day and left them at the brewhouse. Bags will fit into my SUV, and we can really pack them in. Then run over to your place and dump it.

I think we can do your place.

I think we can do your place. I have a truck and we can make runs for whatever week you rent. Iggi may be able to get his work van as well. Most stuff is being used such as wood. I think a couple loads of my truck and the van should clean out the brew house in one day.

urgh.  Not to mention I need to start up a barleywine to go into the barrel when I remove the stout, which I really need to remove now for flavor considerations but I don't want to leave it empty.  It will take at least 3 weeks from the brewing of a barleywine to have it ready to put in the barrel unless I ferment it there.  Maximal pressure for brewing and potentionally nowhere convenient to do it until Brewhaus 2.0 is done!  I need your help obi wan.

I'LL be out of town saturday

I'LL be out of town saturday and sunday for founders.  Thursday and/or Friday would be ideal, although I can't show up til afternoon.  I need to brew up a second saison to blend with the current for the dinner (it will benefit from maximal aging so I'm anxious to brew it asap no matter when we plan the dinner for) and I need to brew up some random ipa that I want on hand for the event in case we get low on brew (if a lot of people indeed show up).  I also really wanted to complete a stout to age for drinking at future annual stout night but that is less urgent.   LMK.

a dumpster is a really nice

a dumpster is a really nice one stop shop fro getting rid of shit in a single weekend or over a few days rather than stretching this out over a few weeks with smaller dump loads.

we still have over a month before official move in day - cleanup is first and foremost. we can worry about some of the smaller (yet important) details afterwards. lets not overstress this, we have ides to be more worried about. we can get h2o from my apt if needed, we have stand alone burners available, we can still brew there while things are being put together.

my truck is off the road till i can pay for it again. i may have access to a work van, tho scheduling for availability can be tricky.

I defer to Dave.  But, I will

I defer to Dave.  But, I will add that, given how quickly 914 filled up with stuff, I'm not too sure we need to hang on to anything in the loft except the rolls of paper (maybe use it as scratch paper for recipes, calculations, &c.) and the little, plastic bowls (once sanitized they could be used for measuring out at least the hops).  That loft will fill up fast with misc. equipment and more grain.

Dan and I were at the space

Dan and I were at the space all day Saturday.  We cleaned the small room on the west side of the building...and to be honest it wasn't all that bad.  We took out a couple bags of trash in addition to that.  I think that if we have a few people helping and loading up my truck to make some (random) dumps, we should be good.  There are boxes up in the loft, a good majority of those boxes will go, but a fair amount can stay up there along the back wall.  There is some interesting and useful things up there that don't necessarily need to be thrown out.  I don't see this taking more than 1 weekend.  Without a dumpster.

I have a car to offer; though

I have a car to offer; though it's only a sedan, not any type of hatch-back/SUV/truck.

There's plumbing (a spigot and a drain) and electricity.  IMHO, it is fundamentally "usable" once there's room in there for burners (e.g., Iggi uses a fish-tank heater and a plastic trash can filled with water for temp-control; no fancy room needed).

Of course we're working toward a kick-ass, fully- (and more-) functional brew house.  But, yes, the first step is clean-up.

This is going to depend on

This is going to depend on people with transportation.  Off the top of my head I can think of Dave's car and Iggi's truck (although the tire is flat).  Anyone else have transport to volunteer?  I think it's as simple as trying to do it on the meeting day as was discussed prior.  I think maybe we could show up a little earlier in the day on Sunday and try and clear up most of that stuff.

I don't quite know if that's the only thing that needs to be done for the place to be operational.  There's the question of water and plumbing as well as the fact that we'll be limited to using whatever yeast works in the temperature that the space is until we find a way to set up a temp-controlled room (insulation and two controllers).  Obviously the first step is clean-up. Just wanted to clarify.

Right, I understand where you

Right, I understand where you're coming from; and, thank you for paying for it!

There is the issue of getting as many of us as possible over there at the same time on the same day.  On the other hand since it's sitting on your property for a week, we could do it piece-meal (people going over to the new space and grabbing stuff whenever they have a free hour on whatever day of the week) but then there's the issue of keys (there's only one...).

We'll wait for more discussion.

I myself think it's feasible (and very generous on your part!) but let's wait 'til others shoot us some feedback.

If I may call it as I see it:

If I may call it as I see it: it's not the cost per se, it's the cost *right now*.  In order to get the space "usable" all we really need is to clean it out (e.g., there are more than a few people with propane burners and big pots in order to make the space minimally "usable").

Furthermore, the space is ideal; the timing, however, is not.  The space is awesome; will suit our needs indefinitely (unlike 914 California).  It's just that all of us are fronting the money for Ides (where we expect to make some moolah for the requisite upgrades to the brew house) which has strapped us for cash for the brewhaus *at the moment*.  If you've been to 914, then you understand.  The new space is just a more appealing workspace and more conducive to a lot of things the club would like to do.  You actually want to be at the new brew space as opposed to the dank, crowded basement that is the old brew house.  Eight of us were crawling all over each other the other weekend brewing our entry for Hoptacular at 914; twelve of us fit - with room to spare - in a cluttered new brew house for the last monthly meeting.

Personally, even if we had shit-tons of money, I would avoid the dumpster simply 'cause I don't want to deal with the city b.s. of permits since we'd have to leave it in the alley.

Once we have Ides under our belt, we'll have some operating money and the new space will become more and more usable and appealing place to be.  I see a huge upward spiral (if that's a term) with the new space; not so with the old space.

I second Daniel's tarps/cars

I second Daniel's tarps/cars idea.  It's just gonna take a bit more hands than we usually get (or a bit more time if we get the "usuals" helping out).  I'm available Saturday October 1st from 10:00-2:00 p.m.; 4:00-??:?? on Saturday evening/night.

Iggi, if you're reading, let me/us know the earliest we can get over there for the monthly meeting on Sunday, the 2nd.  I can bring a car and we can continue to get crap out of there before the meeting starts.

I'm really opposed to the

I'm really opposed to the idea of getting a dumpster as the debt tag on ides is well into the hundreds with expenses adding up everyday.  I feel that we can barely afford ides and some people's tab on that is a lot bigger than others.  If anyone wants to dump money somewhere, please consider helping out with festival expenses (you'll get paid back after the event).

Dave and I cleaned out the small room (not the cold room) out the other night by dumping in other people's trash cans and bins.  I think we should get a few tarps, line people's cars up, dump in and drive around.  That will be free.  There's a lot of stuff there but I don't think it's unfeasable as long as things are spread out ok.

I was just in the Brew Haus

I was just in the Brew Haus yesterday with the express purpose of tidying up.  We really need a dumpster...  Or 10+ vehicles to take crap out of there.  It's not just a matter of tidying yet; there's some major boxes of junk in the loft as well as bags and bags of garbage.  Given Ides is three weeks away and the move-in to the new Brew Haus is five-and-a-half weeks away, I think our focus should be on the former.  It would be nice to have the new space clean and tidy for people to see on Ides but the purpose of Ides is not to showcase the new Brew Haus (that'll be down the line when it's up and running).

I can help out. The gas line

I can help out. The gas line is about 5 feet from the ceiling on the east side of the building, inside. We need to also think about running water to our sink...or put the sink near to the door. Eventually that bay on the north-east side of the wall will become a cold storage room. It will be perfect for storing/fermenting brews...should be able to keep it in the 60's with no issues.
