I finally got the email from John at Farmhouse. Here is this years catalog. Lets try to get an order put together in the next few weeks. I'm sure everyone is itching for some mass brewing.
It is a PDF so make sure you open it with Adobe. If needs be, right click to open with Adobe.
John also does bulk hops. I have ordered from him a few times and am always happy. So everyone put on your thinking caps to do up some recipes and lets get brewing!!
Dave, you owe me 25 for the 1/3 of cara best pils malt (carapils) and 1/3 of crystal.
You owe Niilo 28.75 for the Sanitizer plus 5.25 for shipping and paypal fees.
Iggi, you owe Niilo 111.50 plus 5.25 for shipping and paypal.
im in for 1 gal of star san
sounds good. We'll let everyone know when another buy goes out.
There's base two row sitting around and base pilsener. Some of us will have some specialty grains by then, chocolate, crystal 60, munich, and vienna. That's lots of options for styles. I'm sure some people would be willing to sell.
ive not been around, stupid work...anyway. from what it looks like we are or were sitting on some grain. some time in oct id like to get together with someone who has some and buy enuff for a 5 gal batch of somthing i havnt decided, depends on what ppl have i guess. at any rate, its been to damn long and im out of beer other then the gross shit in my brown box of shame.
ha. Still, pretty cheap shipping. I think it comes out to like less than 3 bucks a bag at the amount we have now. Pretty good for a 55 lb item.
i disagree but wont argue. (if one person bought 1 bag or 10 bags by themselves, they would still pay the same shipping rate). im perfectly happy with a tiered rate based on volume ordered. its a nice benefit to this type of ordering.
just to make sure i understand,
ex:
Mr.A buys 1 bag. Mr.B buys 3 bags, Ms.C buys 5 bags - total is 9 bags. Total ship is $78. that means:
Mr.A pays $8.67, Mr.B pays $26.00, Mr.C pays $43.33. correct?
otherwise, each would have to pay $26.
...igz...
in all technicality, not a price break but a greater distribution of cost. and that distribution is only valid if its distributed amongst additional buyers, not additional bags.

ah. I see. So even bigger price break.
Oh. Just looked. Not very significant. Only three cents a pound. If you get two sacks you'll only save like 3 dollars and some pennies.
How significant is the break?
...igz...
The bulk buy group needs 13 more bags to get a price break. Anyone interested in ordering and hasn't put in word yet?
Niilo. I found someone on HBT to split my sack of Best Malz pilsener with. Sent a message to bmason to let him know to adjust it.
Niilo, I'm assuming that if it's not due til Sept. 25th, you won't need the money before Sept. 2nd? If I can pay for it Sept. 2nd then I'll do a sack of Best Malz Pilsen. That's 33.55.
I'd also be very very interested in splitting a sack of either Vienna or Munich with several people. I think we should look at doing specialty grains and if you plan on working on or in belgians or german beers please consider tossing in for one or both of these two. At least three people I think would be good for these. Someone send me a message about them. .53 cents a lb for Canadian munich or .66 cents a lb. for Franco-Belges Munich or Vienna. I'd prefer going with FB if we can get enough people interested. That's 36.30 for the FB or 29.15 for the Canadian. Either slightly over 10 dollars or under depending on who we go with if we can get three people. Please let me know if anyone is interested.
I'll split a sack of Pilsener if anyone else wants to. LMK.
Sorry guys had family in town the last few days so I was playing tour guide all day/night. I will let Demon know of the 3 sacks that Iggi wants. Bill you can definitely put it all under my name. It did make things a lot easier. Anyone else need grains? Maybe a split sack?
i edited my request

If anyone wants more grains please let me know. It looks like we are looking at a delivery day the week of Sept. 25. I think someone is looking to split a sack of pilsner. This might be the last order before winter hits so you might want to stock up. Shoot me a message if anyone is interested.
Grain is at the brew house. If you ordered we have it stored at 914 ready for pick up.
What's the status on the original order? Did we receive it?
;the mid-country malt catalogue is in this thread as a pdf. I think extract is in there? Jared from brewcamp told us they provide it at least.
We should look into bulk Dried malt extract too. There are a fair number of extract brewers in the group. Plus I could use some to make starters and what not. I know at the store its about 4-5 bucks a pound. Wonder what it would be as a bulk price?
Other things to consider in bulk are PBW and star san...or some other equivalent sanitizers
Niilo, does John do all pellets or does he also have some whole hops available?
As for grain, depends on what style you're wanting to focus on jim. Two-row, as Bill mentioned, can be used in nearly any style with success. I bought a sack and used it in ipas, a brown, a wheat, a saison, stout and all were successful in my opinion. The wheat and saison both had to be supplemented with some other grains (wheat in the wheat, pilsen in the saison).
If you want to focus on doing saisons and belgians then pilsen could be a good choice.
thread for hops coming soon.
Oh, okay. No worries. I'm still in for the bulk grain order.
I know that Niilo has ordered bulk hops from some place in Wisconsin. Maybe we should organize a bulk hop order, too?
I know that most people prefer AG and we have a couple mash tuns at the brew space. But.....perhaps we want to order some bulk DME, too, for those who feel more comfortable with extract and/or PM?
Oh, so we don't have to buy entire sacks when we order, we can buy 1 lb. bags if need be? Since I didn't buy on the last order, I only perused the spreadsheet cursorily; I noticed only sacks not smaller packages. Nor did I see hops in the order; didn't know we could get those from the same place/person as the grain.
Count me in for the next bulk order!
So, I'm not too familiar yet with all grain (still doing partial mash) so I'm wondering how you guys make your grain choices, esp. if you're going to have a shit-ton of it to use. On the most recent purchase, did you go with a grain that could be used in a myriad of recipes? Did you choose some new stuff which you'd like to experiment with?
Thanks Bill, helped Dave break down what we got. I'm sure there would be interest in getting more grain before winter. We also toyed with the idea of advertising one of our Chicago happy hour get-togethers on homebrewtalk.com. I understand you know a bunch of the forum locals, you think they'd be up for it?
Looks like we are looking at a Wednesday or Thursday delivery next week. Bill's place isn't too far from the brew house so we could probably just pick it all up at once and bring it straight there. I'll keep everyone posted.
I'm gonna try and swing by saturday evening...if that works.
I work at zed451. It's at Clark and Superior. If you guys want to drop off the money there that would be great. I work today at 6pm and tomorrow at 5pm. Stay for a beer or two I have a decent selection on draught and in bottles.
what's the name of your bar again?
I put the whole order under my name. It's 8 sacks total. I am working friday night so feel free to stop by anytime after 6.
Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place, but I don't see my name on the spreadsheet. Which nights are you working this week... I can drop by the bar after work with the $$$.
Just received the email from Bill about the bulk order. I told him everything looks good. I told him I would try to have everyones money by the end of this week. Please check the spread sheet for the final prices. It comes out to about $28.75 a sack so if you guys just want to do that price per sack you ordered I'm cool with that. So it would come out something like this...
Niilo - $28.75
Daniel - $28.75
Shawn - $28.75
Chuck - $28.75
Dave - $115
Please double check make sure that is what you want and get back me. He wants to place the order by mid next week if possible.
Daniel San, i forgot to ask yesterday, do you know the status on the hallertau order?
...igz...
oh, sorry, 55 lbs is a sack.
Alright we hit the 42 sack limit! I'm sure I will get the email with all the details sometime tomorrow. When i get it I'll post up about getting the money together. I'm sure I will see some of you sunday to discuss.
I think we can definitely look into adding more grain into storage at the space. All we need to do is start setting up an inventory list (which I think Iggi and Dave might have already done).
Since I'm new to the bulk purchases If my math is correct a "sack" is 55 lbs., correct? What's storage like at the brew space (not yet having set foot in there...)?
The bulk grain buy is up to 36 sacks right now. We need 42 for a pallet. Anyone else want some before we hit 42 and cut it off???
I know other people were looking to split sacks too. Here is the spreadsheet he has put together so far.https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvTzfDBkV-sMdDhqZUExRGwyMWxRbkxXZEc3OWpxVlE&hl=en_US#gid=0
Not sure if he updates this regularly but I just sent him an email. I'll keep everyone posted.
is he doing any specialty malt too? I might be interested in some Carmel/Crystal 60 if someone is willing to go halves or thirds on a sack.
Canuck, please for both pils and wheat
3 sacks of canadian 2-row (me, chuck, shawn c.)
2 sacks of pils (dave)
2 sacks of wheat (dave)
The brand for the pils and wheat was unspecified so Dave should let you know about that. I also have some hop orders, do we want to run those through broad shoulders separate from the grain?
I'm pretty sure he plans on atleast a pallet. I will email him see how much room he has. If someone could post up here how much you guys collaborated at the meeting that would make it easier. He lives about 1.5 miles from 914 so won't be a big deal getting it there.
Daniel jotted down quantities in the last meeting. I'd be all for adding to this order. How much is he planning to order?
