i have been in touch with Farmhouse Brewing Supply outta Wisco. They get rum barrels from a local rum distiller (i think Old Sugar Distillery in Madison). Well, he is gonna have some available shortly. Who is interested in a group buy of one or more barrels? they are going for around $110 each for a 5 gal, but ill see if this is negotiable at all. there's also a rumor of a 10 gal barrel!
let me know, yo.
they got dropped off sunday afternoon. i was there yesterday to drop off some more ish, and ill be there tomorrow evening to put a fresh coat of paint the floor.

Daniel feel free to call me when you are near my place. That way we are not standing there looking like dumb asses waiting for the same ride. 815-715-0913. See you guys soon.
ok, then I'll see you guys at waveland and lakeshore at 2.
Meeting at waveland would be easiest. Saves a lotta driving that will go nowhere. (I hate driving in this city)

alright, I'm at beacon and leland, or broadway and lawrence is the bigger intersection around there. I can always meet up at waveland and lakeshore also, if it's more convenient.

If you guys have room for a third in the truck let me know, if not, I'll meet you up wherever to dish out some cash.
i can do sunday to ohare. much better than going all the way out there in a 13mpg truck

I just got off the phone with John again. He is actually flying out of Ohare on sunday and is willing to drive them to Ohare. We just need to meet him near Ohare on sunday around 3pm. Iggi if we could still use your truck to pick them up that will save big time. On both shipping and/or gas. Now that's customer service!!! Not too many vendors would go out of their way like this. And he is still game for us ordering grains from midcountry through him. Also he told of a 15 gallon that he will be getting in a few weeks. But I told him that would take some time and discussion with the club. Bring on the barrel aged brews!!!!!
if ya wanna throw down on it, im sure someone will buy in later.

Alright I told John I'll take 2 of the 10 gallons. He just told me he needs to know by tonight or they are going to someone else. I might get out of work early tonight if anyone wants to meet up and discuss what to put in these. I will front the money for the second if no wants to throw in on it. But I do think this is a great opportunity and we shouldn't pass up on it. If anyone else is down let me know. But definitely doing atleast 2 barrels.
I'm still game on pitching in for one of the 10 gallons. Would prefer to go 3rds but I'll go halves if I half (haha) to. I think I'm free on Sunday but I have no car.
id like to go halves/thirds on a 10 gallon.
...igz...
So who all is in? I told John maybe 2 or 3 of the 10 gallons. He does have 5 gallons too. If someone is willing to drive up there I'm free on sunday. If not I can meet up with you guys on sunday to collect money for the barrels them I can order them. Last time it took a day and a half to get here. Not long at all. Regardless I am ordering a barrel for personal use. Please let me know ASAP...
As far as maintenance for the barrels it's really easy. Just need to put a bottle of liquor in it when we get them. Rotate the barrel every few days to keep the insides wet. I did put a bottle of bourbon in my barrel for 5 weeks and now with my RIS in it, it tastes amazing!!! The rum flavor and smell is completely gone with a few weeks of bourbon in the barrel.
maybe its because im on a severe saison kick...id like to think a mild flavored farmhouse would do well in one of those.

Anyways, I'd throw down 50-75 on this, so if we can get say 4 people interested then I'd do it. Does anyone have ideas for what would age well in a rum barrel? I've heard of whiskey and bourbon barrel aging but never really of a rum barrel aged brew.
Hell, I'll throw some cash down on the 10 gallon with some people. Even if it's not big enough for several people to brew up 5 gallons each, we can still collaborate on a recipe and brew it together. I'd be trusting other people to know how to do upkeep and maintenance on the thing, some people were talking about that last time. Do we have to fill this sucker with 5 gallons of rum when it's not occupied by brew? If so, I'd be less interested due to that cost. Anyone have more details about upkeep?
Just spoke with John earlier this morning. He does have 5 or 6 of the 10 gallon barrels coming his way. The 10 gallon barrels are $150. If anyone is interested please let me know. I told him by the end of this week I will let him know how many we want.
awesome. should add john to the list in the bulk group so we can easily reference him.
now...who wants a barrel?? i would love to get a 10 gallon for the group, for group brews especially. or is that not really big enough for such a thing? still think we should get it regardless.
...igz...
John just told me he has two of the 10 gallon barrels. He also said we can order bulk grains through him. he can order them through midcountry. he also does have great deals on semi bulk hops. I can talk to him about doing lower prices if we do bigger bulk buys.
$150 + shipping for the 10 gallon. Dirving there is always an option if we get a few barrels. That way to save on the shipping if we do get a few.
do you know how much he wants for the 10gal?

I just talked to John from Farmhouse. He said he has one 5 gallon and one 10 gallon left. If anyone wants one or wants to throw down on one please let us know. Not sure how long he will hold on to them for me.
