I am going to teach a series of BJCP classes starting in February. We will meet once every month for a year. This series of classes provides the knowledge needed to become a BJCP beer judge. The classes consist of both technical education as well as development of analyzing skills. The series prepares you to pass the entrance exam as well as developing the judging skills needed for the tasting exam and judging in competitions. The exam is going to be scheduled for January of 2014, you do not need to take the exam to take the classes, but it is encouraged. The classes are open to anyone and not limited to people intending to become judges as the material is valuable for any homebrewer interested in taking their homebrewing to a higher level.
I need to get a fairly accurate count of who will be taking these classes so I can get classroom space and reserve an exam date. (There is already a year waiting list for a exam dates) I am looking at the Dank House or Goose Island. We can always use the brewhouse as a fall back.
Please respond to this post if you are interested and let me know if Tuesday Nights (6:30-10:30) or Saturday mornings (8:30-12:30) will work for you. If both times work respond BOTH.

Looks like I have seven interested parties for Tuesday night.
I have been thinking about it more and I maybe the brew house is the way to go as the teaching location. Does anyone have a strong feeling about it?

The Square Kegs have offered to host at the Dank Haus on Tuesday nights. Would this location make the class unfeasible?

Dank Haus is close to the brown line, so works for me, but I think 7:00 would be a better time. I'm flexible though, so what works best for everyone else is fine.
Also is there anyone who is interested in the classes but not planning on taking the exam?

One other thought, would friday nights work best? I can see a lot of advantagous of doing this. The only problem would be those who work friday nights. Does anyone who is interested work friday nights?

I am a newbie, but very interested in this including taking the exam! Tuesday or Friday works and the Brewhouse is the preferred location.
I would love to get involved in this. Dank Haus works for me because I am already up North on Tuesdays at the shop. I can make it anywhere I need to be that is realistic.

I would be interested if it's on Tuesdays. Dank Haus or brewhouse works for me (Dank Haus is best if you have a gun to my head I have to choose one).
Both times work, brewhouse is better for me location wise, dank house might make me slightly late depending on time.
Interested and fine with all of the options, except for Dank Haus on the weekend.

Good news everyone, the BJCP classes officially have a home and schedule. Classes start Feb 19th. Rock Bottom Brewery has agreed to let us use their space at no cost. Classes will be monthly on the 3rd Tuesday from 7-10pm. There is a class fee of $220 for all 12 sessions that must be paid up front. The fee pretty much goes exclusively to beer, I am not making any money off this. The exam has been scheduled for Jan 2014. I have 20 spots reserved. Payment reserves your spot in the exam. It is first pay first serve. You do not need to take the exam if you take the class, but it is encouraged. If you do not intend on taking the exam please send me only $200 and note that you will not be taking the exam. Payment must be made via Chase Quick Pay to jameslewis0@gmail.com

There are a couple spots left for the class, While the first class does not meet until Feb 19 there is a lot of reading to do before then and there will also be some homework beers to drink. So, if you plan on taking the class please reserve your spot by sending me $220 via Chase quick pay.

Saturdays got tossed out as it conflicted with more peoples schedules than Tuesday nights. So the classes are the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 7-10.
Also, unfortunately reservations for the test filled up a couple days ago. You can still take the class, but I don't have an exam spot for any additional members right now. However, the classes are very valuable whether you are interested in becoming a beer judge or not. You will definitly be a better brewer and taster by the end of the classes. I can petition the BJCP to give me more exam spaces. They are not willing to give me more until I have a waiting list for the exam. So if a handful of people sign up without a reserved test space it will give me something to pressure them with.

Nope, but there are a number of people taking it anyway. There will aslo be a test in michigan the June 2014 at the AHA conference you could register for.

Unfortunately I don't think we're going to have any Formal B JCP classes in 2014. There are a few tests coming up, one at the AHA conference in Grand Rapids Michigan another one being put on by Brian Eichorn of hops in the late summer and there's a study group led by Nancy Rockwood that you might be able to participate in. I don't anticipate having time to teach another class in the next couple years. I would be more than willing to support another member of the club in the teaching of a class and think that there probably will be sufficient capacity within the new judges in the club to do this in 2015 or 2016.
