We are looking to set up a sound system at the brewhouse for this Saturday's Stout & Chili Night. It would be ideal to have an amplifier that run six speakers, or at least four.
Does anyone have an amplifier and speakers they could donate to the club?
Can you volunteer later this week to help set up a sound system?
We have a couple of less than ideal options for the party this Saturday, but if someone is sitting on some gear they don't need, it would be awesome to get a better stereo in the brewhouse long term.

If it's going to permanently stay at the brew house, the club will pay.
I have two speakers that I got a while back used. They aren't top of the line, but they work. They also have funky stickers on them...which I'm sure could be covered up by beer stickers.
I am can donate to the BrewHouse....for the low low price of free, if ya want them.
dropped off two speakers tonight. Friday night I want to hang the electrical enclosure...but afterwards I can help out setting up whatever else you got tied in for a stereo.
I can ask the Chicago Bass Players association to see if they can lend some equipment?
C
hey Conrad, that's a nice offer but I think I want to steer clear of doing something like that just to keep the event's risk factor low. I don't want anyone dropping and breaking something and then us owing someone. Highly unlikely but all the same. We're trying to get something set up permanent anyways.
I don't have time to follow up on buying and fetching equipment. My hope was we could keep it in the club, get it for nothing, and have someone drop it off. If anyone wants to acquire an amplifier and/or speakers and deliver them to the brewhouse - go for it.
Dave's speakers will take care of the brewhouse. I can bring a couple of bookshelf speakers to run out to the tent area. Hopefully Iggi has an amplifier we can use for the night, mine is really heavy.
Conrad, we do not need the big club speakers on stands, but if you could get a smaller set up, like a couple of those sexy Bose towers, that would be awesome. I agree with the concern about liability, but I really doubt we could fuck up rental gear, that stuff is built tough.
From John (head of the Chicago Bass Players Network)
I'd offer our PA system for Saturday, but it is being used. The alternative is that I have a Denon AVR 2106 that I was trying to sell. I'd donate it to the club if it would make me a 'Friend of Chaos'. It's probably worth $150. Then you'd only need speakers.
PS: Tell 'em that it means that Chaos Brew is now 'friends with' the Chicago Bass Players Network
Conrad, everyone, the Denon amplifier would be an awesome addition to the brewhouse, and it's totally worth a year long FoC membership - LETS DO THIS!
Let me know if this is a final say and what John has to do.
C
IN CASE IT"S NOT OBVIOUS: Denon amp retails for $700. We will need more audio help for future events. LETS DO THIS!
I can pick it up Friday and swing by the brew house Saturday at some =
point to drop it off. It retails for about $150 - $200 now, but has =
everything we need. No HDMI (don't think we care about that). it does =
have 100 watts per channel which is bad ass :)
Even better is that is has two sets of main speaker outs.=20
Two questions?
- What music is being pumped through this, and do we need additional =
cabling/hookups?
- What Ohm are the speakers (8 is needed)?
C
I'll check the speakers after work (I read 6 Ohm should work also.) It looks like the amp inputs accept standard speaker wire. I'll get back to you.
We're playing a Pandora station I created off my iPhone. I have a commercial free Pandora account.
If we can have the amp at the brewhouse by 3pm on Saturday, we should be fine (gives me time to go fetch mine if needed.)
Shouldn't be a problem. What does John need to do to signup =
appropriately now?
C
The Denon is some wicked shit! I second the motion!
I think this is a great in kind contribution for a FoC membership!
So what does John need to do so he can get in on Saturday? I'll drop off =
the amp that afternoon.
C
Have him sign up as a web member and ask Lucas change his membership status to friend with a year subscription.
You really should secure 3 more board votes for this project or at least get Evan and Jim to sign off on it.
I can update John's member status when we get the thumbs up from Evan and Jim, just let me know his full name or user name.
Thumbs up - great idea!
Consider this my board member vote - yes.
Oh... my... god. Why haven't we done this? http://thechive.com/2013/09/17/guys-rig-up-buddies-plumbing-with-beer-wh...
I also vote yes
"Give a man a beer, and he will waste an hour. Teach a man to brew, and he will waste a lifetime!" Bill Owen
Yes, from me. That's more than three I think.
Awesome, John said he signed up. I would take care of it on the admin =
side, but I'm not sure where to do it :)
I'll have the receiver tomorrow and will see when the earliest I can =
drop it off saturday is.
C
It's not a vote...
Evan and I can approve spending up to 500....

What's his username? I'll take care of it. For reference, its under "people" on the admin menu. Or you can just go to his user page (click on him or www.chaosbrewclub.net/users/<USERNAME>) and click edit to change the group to friend.

Hey Conrad,
Can you get the amp to the BH tonight? Tomorrow afternoon is cutting it close.
Everyone,
At this point we have two big speakers and two small bookshelf speakers (8 Ohms). The BH will be fine with teh big speakers. I was thinking the bookshelf speakers would do for the tent area, but the tent area could expand. It would be awesome to have another pair of speakers outside, and we could use a hundred feet of speaker wire.
~steven
I'm at a conference tonight from 5:30 till at least midnight. I can drop =
it off after then or in the AM. Just let me know. (need someone with the =
code if it's midnight-ish as I don't have it)
C
hey Conrad, just saw your other post. If you can drop it off Saturday before 3pm we should be fine, the earlier the better. I figure we can put the stereo in the loft or office close to the door.
My suggestion would be the loft just to be safe. There is no remote for =
the unit (just found out today) but just to preserve it and ensure =
nothing gets spilled would be good. Also, it would allow the speakers to =
be up there and out of the way. I can be there way before 3pm. I assume =
setup is happening all day so just waiting to hear back when people will =
be there.
C
I bet a ~20 universal remote from Radio Shack/Best Buy can be made to work for at least the rudimentary stuff (power, input changes, volume).
Houston. We have a problem.
Looks like the stereo amplifier Conrad acquired for the BH is broken, it won't stay on, shuts down after a few seconds when you try and power up. Maybe there is a simple fix? The Denon model number is in this thread if anyone wants to try and fix the amp.
I can provide a temporary replacement for the party Saturday. We could really use a coupole of good sized speakers for outside. Anyone have speakers to loan out for the party?

I just emailed John to see if he knows of a quick fix.
Could it be an OHM problem with the speakers? Are they setup properly? =
It was working fine last week.
Conrad
hey Conrad, the stereo was working up till Monday afternoon. It looks like someone added a fifth speaker, but I didn't see if it was actually wired in. The bookshelf speakers could be a problem (rated from 4-8 ohms). I'll try powering up with no speakers.
I can also take a look when I get down there to pick up Chuck's meat that I'm smoking Friday (giggle giggle). It may be that we've put too much of a load on the amp, may also just be a blown fuse if it turns on and immeditely shuts down. Denon's don't usually break, they just get so old people upgrade, so i'd be surprised if it was a major issue.

It had some problems in the cold with condensation.=20
I think it got a little wet from the rain storms too, but the V-AUX was =
working with the iPhone.=20
My guess is that it is shorting out due to bad speaker wiring or =
adjustments on the processing unit. If needed I can drop by late tonight =
or tomorrow and check it out.
Conrad
Dudes, you guys are killing me. You got the first stereo like a week before I replaced my old receiver, giving me an extra. Now that one dies a week after I donated my old stereo to the goodwill.
I suppose you could check the goodwill on Washington to see if it's still there...

I'm a block away, I'll go check right now. What was the brand?
C
Just got back, no receivers there :(
I would be remiss if I didn't remind people that this last-minute, non-food/beer-related stuff is what jacked up the cost of the last event.
Let's also prevent the next one from blowing out. We said that it was a sound investment for the last event despite cost 'cause we'd use it again. That's obviously not the case.
Thanks.
It sounds like there may be a wiring problem. The amp in the Denons will shut off if the speakers are not wired properly to protect it from damage. Has anyone tried turning it on without anything plugged into it?
Yeah, I like to think the Denon will pull through. I'll run a test tonight.
I hear you Jim. No need to buy anything for Saturday. I do have an amp we can use.
Anyojne got med/big speakers to loan for the night?
So, we have had a definite increase in Trial Members. If you guys need to purchase stereo stuff (within reason), it won't be hurting our bottom line.
Is the Denon really dead then?... I can ask around to see if anyone I know has some old stereo equipment that they would want to sell/trade/donate.
It doesn't look good for the Denon (rain).
If we find an amazing deal on a good amp, let's consider it, but we do have free temporary options. Daniel has an amp that can power the big speakers plus two decent bookshelf speakers he has. However, we could do better.
If someone can bring two big box speakers and a nice amp for the night, please bring it by 3pm Saturday at the latest.
Working on trading some computer equipment for a Sony receiver... I'll let you guys know if I can pull it through by this evening.

Save the denon, I'll take it and see if its repairable post Cinco.

Has someone looked at it? I'll be down there later and can take it home
and pull it apart.

I pulled out all the wires connected to the amp and tried to power up from a couple different sources, just turns on, cycles through input sources (FM, CD, AV, etc.), and then shuts down in a few seconds.
We're not tossing it.
We need a strategy for housing electronics in a leaky barn, east side of brewhouse got hosed with the heavy rains.
