Hi CHAOS,
We are going to do another "big build day", Sunday June 2 from 10am - 4pm (pre monthly meeting)
Goals include:
- Running new piping for the new hot water heater, plumbing the sink island, ect.
- Doing a through cleanout of the ferm room, installing new flooring, cleaning the shelves and putting on a finish coating for easy cleaning, and assessing how to best move forward with that space.
- Finish building out the loft parking spaces
We will need 10-15 people to pull this off. Please come and help. It will count as a brew session for those that are introductory brewers.
I can do any time after 4:00 p.m. on Friday May 17th; May 19th after approx. 12:00 noon; I'm free the entire day on June 2nd.
Weekends I can do, mostly. Weeknights I'm pretty much out.
Oh... my... god. Why haven't we done this? http://thechive.com/2013/09/17/guys-rig-up-buddies-plumbing-with-beer-wh...
May 19th definitely doesn't work for me. Friday, May 17th and Sunday, June 2nd would be the best dates for me.
Sunday June 2nd works for me
"Give a man a beer, and he will waste an hour. Teach a man to brew, and he will waste a lifetime!" Bill Owen
Either Sunday would work for me. (19th or 2nd).
I created a Doodle poll to make this easier: http://www.doodle.com/dt2mtut3sfa8pwef
The website has poll functionality...
Go to the forum you want and click "new poll."

That assumes everyones availibility is equal, Jeff and Chuck are more important than others.
I can do any of the dates proposed
I will do what I can to make any of those dates
Shall we schedule for June 2nd?
Thanks Herb!
2nd works for me Jeff...
OK lets set it as the 2nd. Start at 10am? That will give us 5 hours which should be enough.
I set up an event. Please click "I will attend" if you can make it. Thanks
Can't make it on the 2nd, I have a family party. Let me know if I can help prepare before the 2nd in any way.
I might be able to make it on the 2nd. I should at least be able to make either the morning or latter half of the day. Anyway, I was reading on the Brewhouse committe thread about the refurbishing the ferm room and noticed that someone mentioned drawing it up. I can draw it up on CAD if you want detailed dimensions, plans and elevations? I could do a before and after and different options for finsishes to get an idea of space etc. Anyway, let me know; it could be overkill but it's always handy to have.
Hi Paul,
Thanks for offering ot help. If your an introductory brewer helping on the build day counts as one of your 3 brew sessions.
Are you an architect? I am, so is Gustavo. We can always use help drawing things up, however this one is too much of a mess inside for it to be of much value to draw anything.
However, I have an elevation of the Barrel wall that I am looking to create. If I sent you some info would you be able to draw something for that? Are you able to use illustrator or photoshop?
Thanks,
James
I'm not an Architect but in construction project management. I was trained in CAD for my first job and am handy enough at it. But I have nothing on an Architect.
I could definitely CAD something for the barrel wall but CAD is as far as I go to be honest. I'm not versed in illustrator or photoshop I'm afraid. Although I am willing to try. I think I can get a version of Photoshop for free from Adobe now...

Also, we need cordless drives, especially if they can drive into masory. We need a couple ladders. We need circular saws.
I need some 4x8' sheets of plywood and insulation picked up at home depot sometime this week. If you can do it let me know. I can place the order and all you have to do is bring it to the brewhouse.
Thanks,
James
James - I won't be able to make it on Sunday, but I can pick up the plywood and insulation for you tonight or tomorrow and drop it by the BH. I live by the Home Depot on Addison and Kimball if it is possible to place the order there, that would be convenient. I'll need someone to let me in, though, since I do not have the code(and to help me would be cool too). How much are we talking?
Thats great. 2 sheets 3/4 ply, 2 sheets 1in insulation, 10 frp panels, a couple odd items.
Conrad can meet you there tonight around 8. Will that work? if so ill send you his number.
I can order it at your home depot for tonight.
Sound like a plan?
I might be there a little earlier than 8. Possibly 7. If you can do anything earlier than 8, that would be great as I'm just doing some transfers tonight.
Conrad
Conrad - I will try to get there as early as I can. If you need to leave and I am not there, I would just go ahead, it's not that much heavy stuff and I need the exercise. I'm sure I can find a way in. Winston and I have an arrangement.

Thanks Rich for picking that stuff up and dropping it off. Which FRP joints were they out of? The corners joints or the panel to panel straight joints?

Herb Sawyer has offered to bring in some fresh Black Angus Organic beef for burgers straight from his familys farm in Iowa! He is there right now!
For those who can make it to build on Sunday. If you have not already RSVPed please reply to the thread or click "I will attend" on the event page. If you already clicked the "I will attend" I have got you covered.
Respond by Noon today, he is headed back to Chicago today! Thanks Herb
Awesome, thanks Herb! Thanks for getting the stuff Rich!
Can anyone bring a nice camera? Post build this will probably be the cleanest the ferm room will be :) It would be nice to get a good pic or two of it. Also, are there any additional last minute items needed from the burbs? I'm headed out that way Saturday afternoon and could pick misc. up if it's cheaper out in Oak Brook/Willowbrook area.
Probably going to need a couple last minuite items. i can already think of a few. Ill keep you posted. Thanks for helping last night.
Oh, and I bought the material to do the full ferm room build out in case we have time. I figure if we get some material free later we can use it on the larger room build. So we will be doing a ton of work.
Conrad, how does the Oakbrrok Terrace home depot work for you?
There are a handful of items I missed when checking inventory tonight. and I would greatly appreciate it if you could pick them up.

Shouldn't be a problem. Shoot me a list.
C
I can bring a nice camera on Sunday. I'm planning on being late to the build day/early to the meeting.
Did you ever fiure out a reostat solution for the fan? If you can find something local I can buy it. Jeff will be there today so I can get any info off the fan that you need.
Also, the enclosure is now 60% finished. The outlets controlling the lager fermenter and hot box are fully functional, and we have one sensor extension ready for use. We need one more small space heater, although we won't need a space heater for the lager fermenter for several months now, so we can just use that for the hot box.
I believe we will need to run new conduit into the ferm room to get the ferm room controller fully functional. The current wiring is somehow broken; I'm not sure how. There is no more room in the existing conduit to fish more wire. If we successfully get new conduit run and some wires fished, we could probably get the enclosure ferm room controller working on Sunday.

Ive got stuff going on earlier in the day. But I'll try to get there and do s=
ome work/trouble shoot the enclosure. If the ferm room is being worked on, i=
t would be a great time to run additional conduit too.=20

Dave,
I had also been planning on coming out to handle some of that. Lets talk.
Oh... my... god. Why haven't we done this? http://thechive.com/2013/09/17/guys-rig-up-buddies-plumbing-with-beer-wh...
Im glad someone is planning on working some electrical. Thanks guys
Do we have conduit that we could use to run another to the existing outlet in the ferm room? It sounds like the current one is full and we need to pull a second neutral (we have two hots and a neutral going in) to make things really work. Plus it would be cleaner just to put all four wires in that second piece of conduit. Thoughts?
Oh... my... god. Why haven't we done this? http://thechive.com/2013/09/17/guys-rig-up-buddies-plumbing-with-beer-wh...
There are a few lengths of conduit. Im not sure what size. I have not done an inventory of the electrical
Ok, I'll drive down on Sunday so that worst case I can run to Home Depot and get stuff if we need it for the electrical. Given that I like life I wasn't planning on drinking and working on outlets. Water doesn't mix and all... :-)
Oh... my... god. Why haven't we done this? http://thechive.com/2013/09/17/guys-rig-up-buddies-plumbing-with-beer-wh...
I can bring a Drill/Driver, although I don't have any masonry bits, will we need some? What size?
I beleive we have at least 4 10' lenght of conduit. It's leaning up against the barrels in front of the ferm room.
I have one 3/16 masonry, which is the size we need, chuck may have another....
Thanks to James for organizing, to Chuck for being such an all around construction badass, and to everyone else who showed up to put in some work to make CHAOS better. Oh, and to Herb for sourcing and cooking the awesome burgers!
So, how did we do, ultimately? I know the enclosure is now fully functional. The lager fermenter is being contolled from the enclosure, and the ferm room now has an outlet with heat/cool plugs that is controlled from the enclosure as well. Big props to David and Lucas for all the work they did to get the Enclosure of Justice (tm) working.
The new chest freezer (finally) arrived, and will hopefully be a functional keezer soon. It looked like the plumbing project and the ferm room were making good progress when I left. How did things end up?
-Adam
Hi CHAOS,
We need HELP TODAY to finish the ferm room and get all the fermentors back inside. Conrad will be there at 1pm if anyone can joint him. I dont imagine we will finish everything tonight so please come help when you can. And if tonight does not work for you we will need HELP TOMORROW TOO.
Big thanks to Chuck, Conrad and Jeff who where there all day yesterday and who will be there much of today as well.
Chuck led the effort on the new hot water heater, which is up and running. There is hot water to all the Bays now. We are finishing up the connections to the wash table where there will soon be two spigots with hot and cold water. We are also finishing a permanent cold water connection to the counterflow chiller. Thanks Joe and everyone else who helped with that.
Conrad led the effort on the ferm room rebuild with much help from Josh. They removed allt the insulation that was infested with mice (it looked like an ant farm, except mice). They put aluminum flashing on all the corners the mice could get in from, then sprayed rodent control foam in any joint or opening that was left. The new single sheet linoleum floor is in. The new insulation is in. We just need to put in the FRP plastic wall panels, put linoleum on the shelves, and get the fermentors back in. This is the main focus right now.
Thanks to Jeff and Steven who finished the loft cleanout and labeled the rest of the storage bays.
Thanks to everyone else wou spent the day with us, We made a lot of progress even though the brewhouse looks like a wreck! Please help today and tomorrow get it back in working shape.
I won't even be home from work until 7:00-7:30. I can probably make it over tomorrow evening, though.
Thats great Jeff, can you plan on being there after work on Tuesday to lead the cleaning and organizzing effort? That is all that there should be left to do.
