Tart Cherries Located!

Hi all,

While many of you purests will surely turn up noses at what I'm about to say, hear me out.  I was at Whole Foods this evening looking for tart cherries to add to my cabernet-oaked rosealare innoculated english mild.  Unfortunately, they do not carry tart cherries fresh in the produce section.  HOWEVER, they do carry them in cans.  These are pitted (unfortunately) tart whole cherries packed in nothing but water (fortunately).  No other ingredients...and that includes preservatives (potassium sorbate, etc.) Just cherries and water.

I've looked all over, seriously, to find tart cherries sans preservatives/syrup, and have been unsuccessful.  Cans are a bit pricey ($4/per), but I was more than happy to get what I could.

If this helps, great!  If this is old news....I don't really care.

Cheers,

Chris

Im from Grand Rapids, MI. So

Im from Grand Rapids, MI. So when I go home during the summer I try and stop by this orchard to get tart cherries. The should be ripe the week of July 4th. Unfortunatly I will not be heading that way until August this year. Maybe somone else can pick some up?

Hi Chris!  Are you referring

Hi Chris!  Are you referring to the Oregon Tart Cherries?  These are indeed available year round at Whole Foods.  I've used them to good effect in a Kriek.  I'd be really interested to get my hands on some fresh ones for the summer though!

Some of us work at Whole Foods, so if you're ever looking for a rare supplement for your beer let me know!

I have a friend with a cherry

I have a friend with a cherry farm Michigan.  He has both tart and sweet.  Depending on when and how much you need I may be able to help.  He usually brings them to me early July.

On a related note I'm keeping my eye on a bunch of Wild Black Rasberry's growing on public land in NWI.

I just hung up the phone with

I just hung up the phone with my friend who lives in Traverse City, the cherry capital of the world, and she said fresh Montmorency tart cherries will be available starting around July 10th. The sweet or dark cherries will be available around July 4th. When I don't get to Traverse City during cherry season, a local farm Traverse Bay Farms, http://www.traversebayfarms.com ships to me. She said the news is the crops this will be a bumper crop...so looking good.
