One of our members has a relative that works for Nielsen-Massey, a company that makes very high quality flavor extracts. Their vanilla is considered the best you can get. They want to get some great homebrew recipes using their extracts to publish on their website, so they asked us to host a competition.
They are giving away their extracts for use in the competition (enough for a 5 gallon batch) as well as giving out two grand prizes of $100 for the best homebrew using vanilla extract and the best homebrew using one of their other flavor extracts. The competition is going to be limited to 100 entries.
Available Vanilla Extracts and Flavors include:
• Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract
• Organic Fairtrade Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract
• Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla Beans
• Mexican Pure Vanilla Extract
• Tahitian Pure Vanilla Extract
• Pure Vanilla Extract
• Pure Almond Extract
• Pure Chocolate Extract
• Pure Coffee Extract
• Pure Lemon Extract
• Pure Orange Extract
• Orange Blossom Water
• Pure Peppermint Extract
• Rose Water
The structure is a bit different than the typical competition. Between now and September 19, participants must register their entries on the competition site, provide a complete recipe, note how much extract they will need, and pay the entry fee.
On September 20, participants must go to Brew and Grow in the West Loop or Brew Camp in Lincoln Square to pick up their extract.
All entries are due by November 17 at either of those locations and judging will take place Dec 7.

Regestration is due this Friday for the competion. There are only 30 or so people regestered and two prizes of $100. The odds of winning this are good.
Beer is not due until Nov. 17.
Also 100% of entry fees go to CHAOS, so this is a great fundraiser for us. Please promote it.

We are going to distribute the extract for the competiton at our next meeting. So if you didnt register because you coud not get the extract this Saturday, fear not, I will make sure you get it at the meeting or some other way. The pickup locations are not going to be used so dont try to go to them.

Any way to get some samples before we have to register a recipe? I saw on FB that BJCP guys got to sample them at the class while others were building the new brewhouse the same night (shameless plug to make them available for sampling to everyone).

When I bring the extract to the october meeting you can try them out and make any changes. I plan on having some extra just in case. Request what you think you might want and we can adjust from there. The aceptable range for most the extracts we tried was 1-3 parts per 100. THe vanilla required the most, peppermint by far the least.

Yes you can. Please put the quantites of your request in the special ingredients part of the reciepe. You should be looking at about 1-3 parts per 100 pars for the vanilla. Somewhere around there will give you a good vanilla flavor.
