So I let Joe know but, Josh Smith discovered his Barleywine carboy had overflowed at some point and the airlock was empty. He said he refilled it, but we are going to want and check that his beer didn't get infected before adding it to the barrel. The same goes for everyones batches (including mine). Any batch that doesn't meet the groups standard or has any possible sign of infection should be left out and that memeber should be given the oppurtunity to re-brew and top off the barrel or bow out.
So I had a similar situation over the weekend where the cap on mine hadn't just fallen off... but was entirely missing. Not sure what happened to it but I'll be there tomorrow and I'm going to test and see if it went bad.
Just saying we should and will do a tasting and evalution of all batches before they get racked into barrel.
I have a specialized racking rig that I built for the giant barrel emptying party we had before we moved. It allows all beer to be transferred under a blanket of co2 and avoids any possible oxygenation. Even if I can't make it on filling day I will get this to brewhouse so it can be used. We will also need to thourghouly purge the barrel with CO2 before we start to fill and any headspace that is left afterwords.
i racked mine to secondary saturday. ~9.5 gallons FG: 1.018
smelled and tasted pretty solid. i think the barrel will add great character. i cant be there on the 23rd, but my buckets are on the floor, all the way in back, clearly labeled "mike s"
Racked mine to secondary on Saturday. FG is 1.026 putting ABV at 11% currently. Tasted awesome and super fruity. Think the barrel will do this beer well. Are we set in stone on the 23rd? Let me know and I will make sure to bring the racking wand and purging set up over beforehand. Who is taking lead on this fill?
As far as the barrel fill goes, I am planning to be there, but I would like as much help from everyone that brewed as possible as I have not done this before.
As far as what time goes, i am flexible and available all day, so whatever works best for everyone.
If you can't be there make sure your fermentors are CLEARLY marked in the ferm room so that they can be added. We will need a few hands at least to help prep the barrel, gather carboys/buckets and aid in racking then rinsing the fermentors. More people that show quicker and easier this will go.
Does anyone have a co2 tank with a regulator and hose they can bring so we can sufficiently purge the barrel? The one hooked up to the keezer is a bitch to unhook so I'd like to avoid that if possible.
Tomorrow I will not be at the filling party, will be judging the BOSS homebrew competition in Crest Hill. My beers are in front of Joe's in the ferm room.
My numbers were mixed...OG on both was 1.120
4 Gallons (Glass Carboy) FG: 1.026 - 12.34%
2 Gallons (Bucket) FG: 1.038 - 10.74%
Probably for the best that I didn't hit the lower FG on both as it's a bit too dry and the maltiness of the two gallon batch should even my batch out.
A damn fine beer and excited to see how this one turns out!
Running behind today and prob won't make it there for another hour. Anyone there and getting this underway? Mine are on top shelf at front of ferm room.
Fill went ok, but we are probably 12-15 gallons short. Lucas are you still planning on rebrewing your ten gallons? We could really use that in there ASAP. Also what is everyone's thoughts on having someone sign up to do an additional 5 gallon batch to make sure barrel is completely full?
Lucas if you could go ahead and rack your beer into the barrel ASAP that would be awesome. If you can purge the headspace in the barrel before and after you rack yours in. Also let us know how full it is after yours goes in. Thanks.
No I didn't end up brewing last week. Sorry for not posting earlier. Lucas, is yours in the barrel yet? Do we still need more? I'll plan a brew day for next week if we do.
I am not sure if Lucas' is in the barrel yet. I haven't heard from him. We need to get his beer in the barrel ASAP and then evaluate how much headspace is still left (if any). Perhaps we will only need a 5 gallon batch to fill it completely.
Kyle, we had a PM conversation at the end of May regarding filling, I put my stuff in sometime the week of May 25, don't remember the exact day anymore sorry. I added 9.5 gallons and just about filled up the barrel, there was maybe an inch or two of headspace that I purged with CO2.
I'm stoked to see how this turns out. Since we're nearing the end, should we start planning what we want to put in the barrel next so we can fill it right after it's emptied?
What does a blending batch get us? Does it help balance out the wood? Is it that heavily wooded?
Tossing out ideas for a refill - Sour Stout? Like a madrugada obscura or tart of darkness? The barley wine is the 2nd brew in this, and the next will be the 3rd beer in the barrel. Not sure how many uses it has left before developing off flavors anyways. Just an idea. I would be down for anything.
Last week when we pulled samples from the barrels we decided the next set of batchs to go into each barrel stay tuned for the announcement of all three soon.
alot of folks have expressed interest in the past few months so please be patient. I will put out a list by tomorrow.
I'm in.
Have an event on Sunday afternoon the 23rd so I might be able to make it but depends on time.

My two batches stayed secure. I tasted both before transferring to secondary on Sunday and they were good to go.
Just saying we should and will do a tasting and evalution of all batches before they get racked into barrel.

I am racking mine this week.

I racked mine last night. 1.026 was my final gravity meaning i hit the 12% abv!
Both tasted great, and I do not think there was any problems from blowout on the airlock. Total yield is about 8 gallons.
Kyle - Are you not able to make it at all on the 23rd or is there a certain time you can make?
I have an event from 2-430 so if we started early enough I could help out in the morning.
I have no idea how long it will take, but i am down to start as early as anyone is willing to.
Ill even bring donuts and coffee stout.
I'll be at the brew house around noon, but could probably come earlier if need be.
Why don't we shoot for 9--930?
Sounds good to me. Like I said, no idea how long this will take, but i figure 3-4 hours?
Anyone not able to make that window? 930am-1pmish? Are you ok with someone else racking to the barrel for you?
I can probably be there by 10:30-11:00.
i cannot be there. my buckets are all the way in back on the floor. "mike s"
I'm going to try and be there early in the morning but will have to roll out a little later and won't be able to be around the whole time.

I will be there...

I can bring mine but I have to get it filled...

Mike Summer we found one bucket. Is your other bucket a Vintners best?
Yeah, one is a vintners best. They were right next to each other in the back.
sorry i couldnt make it. howd the fill go? do we have pretty consistent batches? did we have enoigh?
Fill went ok, but we are probably 12-15 gallons short. Lucas are you still planning on rebrewing your ten gallons? We could really use that in there ASAP. Also what is everyone's thoughts on having someone sign up to do an additional 5 gallon batch to make sure barrel is completely full?
Lucas any update on this? We really need to get that barrel topped up ASAP.
Did we ever get this topped off? I plan on brewing this week and could try to brew another batch if we need it.et me know.
Another batch would be useful. We are waiting for Lucas to add his batches in, but even so think we will still be short.
ok, ill brew 10 more gallons if i brew this week. ill post back for sure either way.
Mine has been fermenting for a couple weeks and should be about ready to go into the barrel. Any thoughts on when we'd like to put my stuff in?
Oh... my... god. Why haven't we done this? http://thechive.com/2013/09/17/guys-rig-up-buddies-plumbing-with-beer-wh...(link is external)

Hit enter too early, sorry for not posting here that I had filled and just letting Kyle know, that's my bad guys.
Oh... my... god. Why haven't we done this? http://thechive.com/2013/09/17/guys-rig-up-buddies-plumbing-with-beer-wh...(link is external)
Also, I'll be at the BH tomorrow, would you like me to checkup or pull a sample?
Oh... my... god. Why haven't we done this? http://thechive.com/2013/09/17/guys-rig-up-buddies-plumbing-with-beer-wh...(link is external)
I will be at the brewhouse today too and we can pull a sample
Go for it. I am doing wedding stuff all weekend for my brother in law, but if you guys are around. Go pull a sample and let us know how shes doing!
Did anyone pull a sample? How is she doing?
pulled a sample saturday. its tasting awesome. i'd say we pull it soon, no more than a month from now
Are we going to do a batch for blending?
Not a bad idea Chuck. Maybe we could do a 10-15 gallon batch on the TOP and split it up when emptying the barrel?
I'm stoked to see how this turns out. Since we're nearing the end, should we start planning what we want to put in the barrel next so we can fill it right after it's emptied?
