Want your beer brewed at Gino's East's new brewpub?

I'm really excited to announce a special partnership between Gino's East and CHAOS.

Noah Himmel of Gino's East bought and revamped the LaSalle Power Company over at 500 N. LaSalle for which his vision is "everything Chicago" and he took a shine to CHAOS when he was at a Wing Nite a while back. His "everything Chicago" vision of course includes local/Chicago beer but more specifically it includes CHAOS Brew Club members' beers!

Noah has graciously offered CHAOS a few taps at the 1st floor brewpub/beer hall on an ongoing basis and would like recipes to originate in our club. Noah is asking if we can have the first competition/winner selection by June 1st for the style of Wheat Beer/Witbier/Hefeweizen. The CHAOS member or members whose beer is selected will be brewed - big scale! - at their brewpub!

Fee free to post/PM me if you have any questions.

I will work on the details of the competition/selection while you guys get workin' on your wheat beers! Good luck!

Sweet! Thanks, Jeff!

Sweet! Thanks, Jeff!

So far we've got you, me, Nancy, and Jamie. That's definitely a start!!

Just so we're clear, Noah asked if we can taste/choose the winner by June 1st. Given our calendar, I asked if we can hold the tasting/voting/choosing on Saturday June 7th - **but have not heard back**. So, please have your beer drinkable by June 1st.

I'll let you guys know more details on the date/time/method of selecting a winner.

Good luck!

How much volume do you think I should have on hand for the judging portion here? I want to make sure I don't drink it all by June 6... Or I might just brew a fresher batch

Hmmm.... Good question. Let's

Hmmm.... Good question. Let's shoot for a full 5-gallon batch.

I certainly don't expect the turn-out of one of our events (150+) and it's definitely going to be informal, no-frills, and focused on tasting and voting for the best beer. But, this is definitely a cool collaboration and both Noah and I will definitely send this out via Twitter and FB for our respective parties. Definitely the more, the better (how's that for an answer!). If you have less, that's okay I suppose; all it means is that fewer people will be able to taste (and therefore vote) for yours.

I'm glad I asked then, I was not expecting this to call for anything close to a full batch, or to be a big event. So in that case I will need to plan to brew the recipe again before the deadline

Don't sweat it, Jamie! If you

Don't sweat it, Jamie! If you have time to brew, that would be great. But, if not, whatever amount you have of the old stuff is good to go. Better to have a smaller amount of properly conditioned beer than a lot of a green batch. This "voting" came at me pretty quickly and so I shot this thread up; still sussing out some details.

In fact, I've written Noah to see what he expects of it. You asked a good question which got my juices flowing. I'm wondering if we even want this to be a "public" event. After all, we want to give Noah a good recipe, I'm wondering if we don't just get the BJCP certified people in the club to taste it and vote.

If anyone remembers the Lagunitas "Shoot Out" the 6-8 bar owners at whose bar the beer would be served convened at our old brew house, shut the door, and scored the beer submissions. They emerged with a winner.

I think this may be the way we'll go... I definitely want to follow through on Noah's request but I also want it to be as low-impact on the club as possible (seeing as we have a lot going on in May and June).

Been doing some thinking and

Been doing some thinking and here's how I'd like to run this.

8-10 judges (depending on number of entries) will convene at the CHAOS brewhouse (we can close off the front bar for the judges), they'll be given sufficient time to judge (again depending on number of entries), and at the end of the judging time we'll open the doors to Gino's/CHAOS/other people, announce the winner, taste all the entries (while supplies last) as well as drink other CHAOS-brewed beer and/or beer which Gino's can donate (if any) to the event; maybe get a little food or do a little BBQ'ing.

Basically, exactly like the "Shootout" Lagunitas held at our old brewhouse if anyone remembers that. Not too big, no-frills, but with a little structure, a little formality, and some celebration/acknowledgement of the new partnership.

I've suggested some times/dates to Noah and the gang. I'll let you know as soon as something is finalized.

So, Jamie, et al., you should save (or brew) enough for each of the judges to taste (2-3 oz. per judge) and once judging is over and the winner announced other people can taste the submissions (if there's any left).

Thanks Jim. When you compare

Thanks Jim. When you compare to Shootout,.do you mean the open party competition CHAOS portion, or the Lagunitas closed for missing that was a few days later?

I meant the CHAOS brewhouse

I meant the CHAOS brewhouse portion when we 8-10 judges closed themselves off at our brewhouse for a couple hours, judged, and then emerged, announced the winner, and people then drank and mingled.

I didn't mean the big party they had a few days later at Murphy's Bleachers where there were 150+ people.

Sounds really cool!

Sounds really cool!

I'd definitely like to submit a wheat beer for this.. I will brew in collaboration with David Jones (new to the club) in the next week or two so it can be judged by june 1st.

Does it need to be bottled? or will a growler suffice?

Excellent! Thanks, Nick!

Excellent! Thanks, Nick! Since we want the judging to be anonymous, let's do it all brown bottles. Make sure you have 6 bottles each (10 judges x 2-3 oz. with 6-16 oz. leeway).

I still haven't heard from Noah so proceed under the assumption that you'll need 3 12 oz. brown bottles and then as much more as you can spare for people to drink after judging.

Sweet!

Sweet!

One of the many thoughts behind this partnership/collaboration is that it will encourage CHAOS brewers to step up their game quality-wise. I know that June 1st is a tight deadline but perhaps you all want to consider brewing sooner than later to give your beer as much time as possible to condition.

I haven't heard back from

I haven't heard back from Noah yet. As soon as I do, I'll put it up. Don't worry!

I'd like it to be either Thursday June 5th or Sunday the 8th. I'll touch base one more time and see. 8-10 judges would sequester themselves in the bar area of the brewhouse and judge and then emerge with a choice. Thereafter some informal mingling and drinking of beers (contestants' entries if there's any left and/or CHAOS-brewed beer and/or Gino's-donated beer). Confirmation of details ASAP.

Yes, 3 12 oz. bottles of wheat/wit/weizen.

Haven't heard anythin from

Haven't heard anythin from Noah so here's what we're going with, will create an event for it soon: Thursday June 5th, 6-9 pm, but have your beers at the brew house by Tuesday the 3rd. 8-10 judges will sequester themselves in the bar area of the brew house and judge from 6-7:30 (8:00 at the latest). Thereafter attendees can sample the entries (while supplies last) as well as other CHAOS-brewed and/or Gino's-donated beers. Low key but something official to mark the first beer chosen for Gino's and our future collaboration with them.
