Spiteful just emptied out their GFY Stout and Pigeon Porter barrels. They have three 55gal and two 30gal bourbon barrels that they are willing to give to us for free. We just have to go pick them up.
Please let me know ASAP if anyone wants any. They are giving us first dibs before they offer them to someone else.
I dont think that we have been having great beers come out of 3rd use barrels. But if anyone has any ideas to use these for tables etc then we can use them.
These would be good for a sour project if anyone is interested in doing that.
Down to three 55gal and one 30gal now...
I'm interested in trying a 30gal especially since they are free.
Eric - I can pick them up if the club wants them. If not, I would take one of the larger ones for myself if that is possible. I want to use one to make some stuff, not beer though.
If the 30G barrels are going to be used and placed on the top shelf (where there is room right now) that shelf needs to be reinforced / rebuilt with cross members. The shelf is already bowing in the middle and the plywood is under the metal lip in the center.
Hunter - 30gal
Rich - 55gal
Down to just two 55gal barrels now.
Rich, when can you pick them up? The sooner, the better as Spiteful has pretty limited space.
How about tonight? If I am just picking up the one, I can swing by any time after 6pm that works for them. Just let me know.
I am available tonight after 8pm, or tomorrow any time. I will be doing the tasteing class tomorrow anyway from 7-10. Thoughts?
I'd be interested in doing a barrel aged sour, if others wanted to help brew it.
Nancy, you can be in on the NExt batch for a sour were doing in the original Maple Barrel. No one responded to the Post So Ill post the recipe soon and asume your in on it. That will be 4 people we will be looking for min 3 new people.
OK, cool. Thanks
I'm down for getting in on the sour as well.
As for the 30 gal, I sitll would like to use that barrel for an imperial stout or barley wine. Of course, it would be fun to collaborate with a few folks on it as well.
We can use an extra barrel as a table for our parties. We lost one to the Tap Project and the other is falling apart.
I should add that the barrels acted as weights to tent city as well...anyone that was around for setting up for Cerveza de Mayo knows that they prevented the city from being blown away several times.
Id say we take them for decoration/weights/tables but prob want to avoid using them for any clean beer. I don't have the capacity to head up a sour project at the moment.
Eric - Looks like we will take whatever is left. Let me know about the time and where I am picking them up.
Sounds good Rich... I just texted them to see how late they will be there tonight. Will get back to you as soon as I hear back.
Josh, I'll join your sour project if there's still room for another person.
Rich,
Unfortunately they are leaving around 5:30 today... any chance you can pick them up any other day this week?
Three 55gal might be too much to fit in Rich's truck at one time. He can pick up two of the 55gal and the 30 gal at once. He will be picking them up on Wednesday around 6pm. If anyone has a vehicle that can fit a barrel so that Rich doesn't have to do multiple trips that would be great.
I can go and grab the other one.
Cool, thanks Mark...
Hi all. I will be brewing Wednesday and can help load the barrels into the club. The club having the barrels is always the priority, but if we have an extra barrel, I would love to have it for home/non brew related use.
Hunyun33 - sounds like these barrels might not be best, but I'm down for a barrel project. I've never barreled anything before, so I wouldn't be a great lead on the project, unfortunately
Josh - I'd love to brew for the sour barrel project you mentioned to Nancy, if there's room!
Thanks,
John
John - Some help would be amazapants.
HA! I love your adopted vocab Rich! :)
Barrels are at the BH. I am no expert, but they smell really good and have been kept sealed since being emptied and cleaned, so I am pretty sure they could be used for beer if someone wanted to.
If anyone happens to exhaust one of their barrels and doesn't want it anymorE please let me know and I will pay you for it as well as for shipping! Looking for something below 30 gallons preferably.
I'm down to start a 55gal sour barrel if there's still a barrel and interest?
Hey Tim,
I don't think anyone has claimed all the 55gal barrels yet, so if you want one to brew a sour it's yours. I'll be down to join you on this project as well...
I will brew for the sour as well

Why not, I am in. There is also a smaller Koval barrel, probably 30 gal.
What were you thinking, Tim? How patient are you? What about a Flanders red? Would give us plenty of time to brew a younger beer to blend with, too.
I am not sure how many 30 gallon barrels are at the brew house, but I was planning on doing a Flanders red with the barrel from Spiteful. I am definitely looking for collaborators of anyone is interested.
We will have to review the space that all of these barrels will take up before everyone starts to fill etc.. Why dont we have a meeting with the people interested in starting barrels. Review what would be best for each, and develop a plan.
Posibly after NHC next week?
I'm game to meet and discuss.
Me too
I'd love to be part of this conversation!
I'm down to do a flanders, and also interested in seeing what's possible within 6-12 months. Maybe something more complex with some lingering chocolate and roast malt flavors? Something like Tart of Darkness with a more mellow acidity? Or Boxer's Revenge. Just some ideas of the directions we could go.
Down for a sour
I will be around the brewhouse tomorrow. If anybody wants to come we can formally discuss the current state of the barrel projects at about 5 o'clock.
