I take back what i said im not going to do a group grain buy for this. Im not willing to drop 500+ on grain for something that may not go through.
come on the day uou sign up for with everyghing you neeed to do 1 batch and hopefully we will double up mash and boils to get things done quick and generally more consistant
So were only doing 5 gallons per person, instead of 10? I'm gonna try to brew this weekend if possible. Which day were people going to brew?
If everyone puts down a date from above we will be brewing on satuday after we empty the other barrels. If every person does not sign up and express genuine interest in the project i will consider it pretty much scrapped.
How much is the NB kit? I have to say I am a lot less interested if the ingredients for this are not available locally. I certainly won't have it by this weekend.
Im ok with substitutes from brew and grow for whatever is available closly matching we just have to stay consistant.
Unfortunately I wont have enough time on sat after bottling and I am out of town on the other brewing weekend. So if there is an alternate that wants my spot, I am ok giving it up.
Hey guys. Thanks for organizing all of this, Josh. I can brew earlier on September 27, but have a Black Keys show later that day. Is it a 5 or 10 gallon batch, I'm down for both. The kit is $55.45 on the website and appears to be for 5 gallons. Have you ordered already? Maybe if there's less interest we can put it all for the 27th and do a group buy for the kits and stuff. If we get 6 people w/ 10 gallons confirmed, we should be good to go, right?
Yes if we get 6 people to confirm 10 gallon batchs we can get it down on the 27th.
We can bulk order all of the misc ingediants if I get confirmation from everyone that they will participate in the big brew day on the 27th.
Awesome. COME ON BREWERS, LET'S DO THIS!!!!!!!! As an added bonus, I have a bottle of w00tstout that I got in california when I was there in July. I'm down to share it on our brew day or a future point of this project.
I cannot come to brew on a Saturday. Is it totally off the table to brew this on my own? I understand that we're trying to get consistent batches for everyone, but at what point does it become one person brewing the same recipe for everyone on the project?
Mike- I think Josh is just doing his best to get the barrel filed in a short amount of time. Most of the people who committed to this do not seem willing or able to follow through, so he is trying to make the best of it.
I know he's doing his best to get the barrel program at chaos in a better place and I applaud that. I was just suggesting that by having all of the mashes done in two batches on the tower of power, while likely increasing efficiency and consistency, takes a little away from the individuals who are participating in the project. Just my two cents. If there are no exceptions, so be it. I'll try to get on the next one. I don't intend to ruffle any feathers.
Josh, I can brew this on the 2nd brew day!
Well, I think only 4-5 people have committed to follow through on this. I am still in for 5 gallons however we do it, but that that still leaves 35- 40 gallons short. How do we make that up? Split it up between individual and group brews?
Ok looks like my plan will not get enough steam to go through. That might open us up for more flexability. We can now brew by ourselfs for this project. Well keep it five gallons for now unless we dont get enough commitments. One stipulation is that you will need to commit to brew within the next 3 weeks. Ill still be brewing on the 27th if people wanna fill in the other spots feel free.
Well, if you still want to brew for me, I'm totally cool with that
I'm down to brew for this on the 27th, as long as I' done by 4pm or so. Josh, are you getting the Northern kit? If so, let me know so we can order it together
John ive always thought kits were a waste of money especially when they list all the grain bill. Ill try and talk to b and g to see if theyll otder the specialty malts if tgey dont have them.
Sure, that sounds good. Let me know if they're able to grab the specialty stuff. I work by the on Morgan and Monroe and can grab it from them during a lunch break.
Hey Josh. I also noticed that you have 3 reservations for the morning/afternoon on Sep 27th. Are you using the tower of power? Can I get in on one of your bays?
John if your that close and you wanna stop there feel free see if they can get all the grains for us.
Cool. I can probably go there on Tuesday. I'll keep you posted
I plan on brewing next week. I can do 10 gallons if we need it. Let me know.
Josh - I will do mine on the 27th as well if there is room.
For you rich theres always room :)
Are you comparing me to Jello?
I'll be there the 27th to brew this.
IN for Woot! Woot.
Awsome thanks nancy,
Ive updated the brew list looks like we only need 3 more batchs to get this project off the ground. Sign up to brew if you havent already. And also let me know what day you plan on brewing this if you havnt already.
I plan to brew mine on October 3rd.
I'll brew this 9/28! I'm not afraid to admit I was a Wil Wheaton fan. I'm pretty sure I clipped all his teen mag heart throb pics... and the only reason I ever used to watch Star Trek was for Wesley Crusher!
Super excited to make this nerdy beer! Woot!
Josh,
Would love to get in on this if there are slots available. I plan to brew with Jeff on 10/3. Can we get the ingredients from B&G?
Ken,
yes theres still room i updated you on top. Yes just ask the guys at b and g for substitutes.
We doing the pecans and cacao liquor as written? I'm down, just wondering where we can get the former. Hopefully picking up some ingredients today.
Also, the recipe just says 2 oz Target at 90 minutes. What's the expected IBU on that?
Josh - Going to have to push my brew date to the following weekend 10/3, unless I can find time before then to do it. I forgot I am out of town this weekend.
Kyle,
Sorry im dropping the ball on this one. I was planning on doing all the roadted nuts in house in one big batch. Mostly because i want some to eat for myself :) ill try and confirm before saturday.
As far as the coco liquire do you want to take the lead on sourcing that in bulk for the group?
Rich, that is unacceptable :) jk thatnks for the updte
Sure thing. I'll see if I can't find out what they use and if not I'll check the liquor stores. Plan C will be to source come cacao nibs and make our own.
Kyle - I think you may be thinking of Cocao Liquer, not Cocoa Liquor. I think Cocoa Liquor is more like a concentrate that is used to make chocolate. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
Rich,
your correct. Its not actually liquor from the store. I bet we can get it at blommers anyone wanna check it out? Im rarly in the city anymore.
IF we cant get it local I think this product looks fine
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J3775VS/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd...
Word. I'll check it out. Thanks for the clarification.
I can go over to Blommers at lunch tomorrow. It is only a few blocks from where I work.
Blommer's website says they sell it in bulk. No idea what quantity that is, though.
Picked up the rest of my ingredients over lunch today. For simplicity and ease, I would recommend the dry yeast and to pitch at least two, rehydrated packs for every 5 gallons.
I'll bring an O2 tank on Saturday as well (unless I overlooked, I haven't seen any around the brewhouse).
I don't think we want any stalled or stressed fermentations on this dude.
Did B and G have all the grain?
I picked up all of my grain from B &G yesterday. I was going to brew last night but I got bay-jacked so I'll have to try to get it in next week if I can. I just grabbed unsweetened baking chocolate in place of the cacao liquor. It's the same thing just in solid format (according to Wikipedia anyway)
http://www.ghirardelli.com/recipes-tips/chocopedia/chocabulary-z
Confirmed from Ghiraedelli (pretty good source in chocolate) that unsweetened chocolate is indeed the same as cacao liquor. Every grocery store has it so you don't need to make a special trip or order anywhere.
Thanks for the info Mike!
Mark or Rich, Ken and I are brewing our batches together on the ToP next Friday afternoon. There's room for one more batch to be done with ours if either of you would like to join us. We'll be starting about 1:30.
I would, but I cannot get there that early unfortunately.
