Are we still having work days

Are we still having work days Jan 16-17 for this? The brewhouse calendar is blocked off for it, and if this isn't happening, I want to drop that block so people can make plans to brew.

Hey Folks,

Hey Folks,

A quick reminder that we are going forward with cleaning up and painting the front bar area this weekend.

WALLS:  We did not identify any sposts for installing new dry wall, so the anticipation is to just do patching, surface cleaning, and paint. I will follow up soon with color options to choose from

DRINK RAIL:  It was agreed a drink rail would be a good addition to the east wall accross from the bar. We will use barrel staves to cover up the weird space at the top of the north wall (above front door).

WINDOW & DOOR TRIM:  We should consider trim and/or moldings around the door and window, right now it's just rough cut drywall edges.

SEATING:  Stackable stools seem like the most economical solution for seating. We need to look into options.

I will follow up with color options and better sketches.

Are we doing anything about

Are we doing anything about the walls in the keezer area? These are probably the most mutilated of all. Barrel staves here too?

The new TV is ready (a 47" VIZIO GV47L), I can bring it this weekend if we want it. No stand, it'll need a VESA wall mount which I don't have. I imagine the alotted budget would cover that, someone might want to order one off monoprice or amazon or something so that it's here by this weekend. Might have to get a universal remote too, I havent found the original one yet.

Where do we want to put this? I think behind the bar in place of the mirror is the most utilitarian, but I'm not sure if that part of the bar comes off. It's kind of big for one of the corners. Above the keezer could be cool if we got a telescoping mount so that you could see it from the brew bays or from the bar area...and then it could display RaspberryPints or something.

Height (inches) 30.2
Width (inches) 44.5
Depth (inches) 4.5
Unit Weight 88.9 lbs.

Ken brought up closing off

Ken brought up closing off the space above the partial walls on the south end of the front room, but we didn't address the keezer area.

I think everyone would agree the keezer section could use drywall. We set the budget at $750. If we have the time and and enough people helping, we could decide to take on the keezer section.

We didn't nail down a schedule for the weekend, but the plan is to identify everything we need early Saturday and then make a run for supplies. Some work will get done Saturday, but Sunday is when most of the work will go down.

I have a bunch of window and

I have a bunch of window and door trim left over that I could donate, it would certainly cover the window and door. I also have a wall mount for a TV that might work, its a flat wall mount, I think its universal.

Not sure if I have time to get the stuff to the brew house though.

Hey Brewsters, I've mocked up

Hey Brewsters, I've mocked up some color studies for the front bar area.

As I see it, we have two concepts to guide us:

1. Old School Bar (dark brown, light tan)

2. Factory Breakroom (dark gray, manilla)

Once we have consesus on a direction, we should consider getting paint samples and painting patches of the walls to see how the colors work with the bar.

1. Old School Bar

Iggi and I met at the brewhouse last night, and we feel our high gloss cherry wood art deco bar dictates we go for brown and tan. We decided that a very dark brown is best for making the cherry wood bar stand out, and it will greatly reduce the visual clutter of the stools lined up along the walls.

2. Factory Breakroom (dark gray, manilla)

My neighbor does painting and decor, and he thought a bunch of brewers in an urban center should go for more of a factory vibe. I love that idea, but the high gloss cherry wood bar just doesn't seem to fit with that. For the last two mock ups, I took samples of the current wall colors and selected modern versions.

Why two tone?

Everyone likes the two tone treatment as it integrates the bar to the rest of the room, and it will also work well tying in the drink rail shelves and chair rail trim along the perimeter of the room. I have created A & B versions of each concept to show the difference between darker and lighter colors. If we want the room to be more of a cozy hang out, darker works well. A brighter treament might be better for classes and meetings.

What's your take?

Steven,

Steven,

Love the mockups.  Just out of sheer curiosity I'm curious what a 1-tone mockup would look like.  Something a bit simpler seems like it may look nicer.  Especially if the walls are all one color, and the door is the same color as the walls. The two-tone seems very busy, especially when the door is a different color.

Two tone elongates the room

Two tone elongates the room and has a best of both worlds charm in hiding lower wall dirt while maintaining a nice bright reflective zone towards the ceiling.

Iggi and I were at the bar with paint chips in hand, and the colors in 1A just clicked. My mock ups are a nice visual aid, but you really have to be there to know. I will do my best to acquire paint samples for treatment 1A and paint sections of the walls.

Matt, I agree the horizontal basket weave positiohning of the barrel staves is way cooler. Iggi has two old barrels we can take apart at his place (near brewhouse.) I feel we really need to stain, or at least oil the staves. My comp has a reddish tint over the barrel staves I photoshopped in place, and I think this red tinting will be key in avoiding wood tones clashing with the bar.

Painting is the least of our worries time and effort wise. Surface prep and cleaning are huge, and the barrel stave cornice and drink rails are the most planning and labor intensive pieces.

We need to break up into teams and divide the work, otherwise we'll be up in each others grills slowing everything down. I will work on a spreadsheet that divides up tasks and lets people sign up for time slots over Saturday and Sunday.

FWIW, I still maintain that a drink rail could be held up by 4 legs (pipes simply screwed into pipe flanges - http://www.homedepot.com/p/3-4-in-Black-Malleable-Iron-Threaded-Floor-Fl...); and held to the wall by 2 "L" bracket (one at either end) and the metal i-beam in the middle. That wall with the plaster and lathes is janky and fragile at best; something resting on the floor is much more stable esp. if it's concievable that people are leaning on it with an elbow or their arms at the same time...

I had a similar idea thinking

I had a similar idea thinking the drink rail could use support legs, but Iggi thought it would be a bad risk for tripping people, particularly drunk people, in which case a cantilever shelf mount would be better.

We have discussed having coat hooks under the drink rail. Legs might be better for handling extra weight, and provide a block from coats getting knocked down.

Another option altogether is just going with 4 small round cafe tables with four stools each.

Yeah... I was envisioning a ledge no more than 8-12 inches, actually. Just enough for a pint glass and an elbow. It would be so close to the wall the legs would be no more of a trip hazard than coats (which I also think is a good idea).

I'm torn 'cause we could use

I'm torn 'cause we could use some more tall boys (vel sim.) for parties. But, I'm leaning towards rail all the way across for two reasons: (1) it keeps a very open aisle all the way from the front door to the brewing part of the brewhouse; and, (2) we can get 12 of those stacking metal bar stools (CLICK HERE for an example) which we can get out of the way into a 17"x17" footprint (we can't fit tables into a footprint that small if we should ever want them out of the way).

I like 1a alot, 3b as a

I like 1a alot, 3b as a second. Also, I think supporting a rail on the floor is in our best interest based on the state of the walls. I can too easily envision a wall mounted rail dropping a full load of beers onto the floor.

Tables may actually work better in the space, especially past the bar. So my preference is for the third drawing if the first proves too tight.

Hi Wes,

Hi Wes,

In the past we have hired contractors for significant upgrades, and we have a few difficult projects on the horizon where there may be funds available to pay for a professional – our plumbing in particular.

Most brewhouse improvements are done by volunteers with the club paying for material expenses, which is how we are handling the front bar remodeling work this weekend.

We have agreed to do the following:
1. Repair sections of the walls
2. Paint the room
3. Build and install a drink rail with coat hooks on east wall
4. Build and install a barrel stave panel for top of north wall
5. Acquire stools
6. Clean up lighting

Planning & Design Meeting
Sat Jan 16, 10am - Noon
--------------------------------------
We need people that can help with logistics, design, and acquiring tools and materials, particularly for the barrel stave panel and drink rail. My thought is once we have agreement on what to do, we can then break up into small design and construction teams.

Construction & Site Prep
Sat Jan 16, Noon to 6pm
--------------------------------------
Construction of the drink rail and barrel stave panel starts tomorrow afternoon. I would also like to include a chair rail strip along the perimeter of the room in line with the drink rail, and we need trim around the north wall door and window. I would prefer staining and finishing the wood to painting it, and that will require a few coats with drying time. We also need to figure out which sections of the wall will need drywall. Iggi suggested a kick board along the bottom of the east wall where most of the holes are. We could also do some significant spot improvements to the keezer area.

Construction, Painting, and Finishing
Sun Jan 17, 10am to 6pm
--------------------------------------
Sunday is when we will be painting, building, and installing. Hopefully we get everything done so we can get back to brewing Monday, but I suspect there will be follow up needed leading up to Stout & Chili Night, Sat Jan 30.

This weekend has been a long time in the making, hopefully this kicks off a wave of brewhouse improvements this year, there is so much to do.

Pete and I were at the

Pete and I were at the brewhouse yesterday looking at how much seating we could cram into the front room. We decided four top cafe tables would take up to much room, so it looks like a drink rail along the east wall with eight stools is the way to go. We have two padded stools, and four nice wooden ones with backs.

Twelve new stools would round out the room nicely and create seating for 18 people.

The drink rail is going to be tricky because of the electrical condiut, thermostat, and electric heater. If the rail goes above the conduit like I have shown, it will be uncomfortably high when you are seated next to it. We may want to put it under the conduit, which would match the height of the current cafe table.

i'd be glad to lend any expertise i can.  i think your schedule is very ambitious....  Some of these projects need time to cut, fit, & finish--some of which might be done off-site, such as cutting the barrel staves, fabricating brackets, etc.  My suggestion is you work with your volunteers, determine if anyone has knowledge/experience/competency to actually complete the projects, then determine what sequence things need to be done, than assign someone the task to complete task.  Once the major work is completed, only then do you worry about painting--which is typically last.  big crews are nice for demo, cleaning etc.  but a carpenter/plumber/electrification usually works alone or with a helper.  (too many brewers spoil the brew!)   you might be a couple of weeks away from painting... (Things like conduit, thermostats, etc. can be moved pretty easily)  I'll try and get down there, but if i can't make it, please feel free to shoot me photos and call with questions.  630-402-7229  (another consideration is that since you don't own the building, you may want to build things in such a way that you can take it with you if you move!)

Thanks for helping out Wes!

To all - FYI I was planning on hanging two 2x4s up top and literally just nailing staves to the board vertically. its the easiest and we already have everything for it at the BH. Shouldn't take more than an hour. If anyone wants to talk about hanging them horizontally thats fine, we'll just need to take measurements, get supplies and cut wood. I should be there in the early afternoon.

I met Wes tonight at the brewhouse, and he has agreed to help construct the drink rail and handle the installation of the chair rail and the door and window trim. He also thinks we should go for bead board or wainscoting for the lower wall under the chair rail. Wes would like to fabricate these items off-site and bring them in for installation and painting.

I like this idea as the drink rail and trim need to be done right. If Wes can finish and install by Wed Jan 27th, we will have enough time to do touch up paint and lighting for the party Sat Jan 30.

This allows us to focus on the barrel stave panel and drywalling the keezer area. We can also paint the lighter upper section of the walls.

We had around 6-8 people on site most of the day, and we managed to clean up and patch the walls, then ended the day putting a couple coats of primer down.

Sunday will entail painting the final light color (upper walls), picking up drywall, and cleaning up the brew house. We could use some help cleaning from 4-6. Anyone have a truck? We also need help picking up drywall.

Wes is building the drink rail and getting materials for trim and wainscoting. We are looking to install those items somewhere from the 24-27. We will need a few volunteers in the evening, let you all know the schedule when it firms up.
