CHAOS Beer Advent Calendar

UPDATE:

Let's all have the beer at the clubhouse fro the party this Saturday,
and we'll do the divvying up during the party!!!

If you can't make the party just put your case under the airhockey table upstairs with a
DO NOT DRINK FOR ADVENT CALENDAR sign on it and your name

Here's the concept...

Twenty-four of us buy a case a beer that costs between $30-$50, we take all the cases and divide the beers up so each person gets a bottle of each.  We randomize it and put a number on each one, and we all drink a beer a day for 24 days from December 1 - 24.

So we don't all buy the same beer, here's a link to a Google Form to sign up and put the name of the case of beer you're going to supply ( or put it's a surprise and we'll hope for the best )

https://goo.gl/forms/mF2m9a1yTan8JMVW2

If we don't get 24 people to sign up....with 12 people we can do 2 of each beer

Here's a link to see the responses of who and which beers - https://goo.gl/FJahQu

We can't see what others are

We can't see what others are buying, so how will we know if we're buying the same beer as someone else?

I think four six packs or six

I think four six packs or six four packs will be what most of us have to do for a case. There isn't much decent beer sold as a 24 pack...

Got mine. Are you guys ok if we open it (slightly) to outsiders? I may have a couple guys at work that would be interested. I can get in touch with them separately and see if I can get some takers. Would be awesome if we could get to 24...

I'm getting my beer this

I'm getting my beer this afternoon, so I actually might copy Chuck's idea and maybe get two 12 packs instead for some variety. I couldn't get the Kinslahger due to availability, so I'll be stopping at Buckledown today and get some of theirs as well as maybe their new IPA.

I have it written on my box,

I have it written on my box, which is at home. So I don't know. I actually tried to delete my comment because it might start tomorrow since 13th-24th is actually 12 days.

There may have been some mild intoxication when we were figuring all this out.

Thoughts so far y'all? I'm a

Thoughts so far y'all? I'm a little behind but it's Friday so I'm catching up. Today's beer, the Old Jubilation.

December 15

Avery Brewing Co. - Old Jubilation Ale

8.3% ABV

Aroma 10/12

  • Sweet malt aroma. Aroma has dark, caramel, dried fruits, mostly raisins.
  • Some esters, some spicy hops

Appearance 3/3

  • Dark amber with a ruby red glow under the light. Light tan foam head sticks to the glass.

Flavor 15/20

  • Caramel malt and brown sugar taste, light earthy bitterness on the finish.
  • Taste is a mellowed malty sweetness with dark fruit layered throughout.
  • Spicy hops balance well with the malt.

Mouthfeel 3/5

  • Light body and carbonation. Low creaminess, no astringency.

Overall Impression 6/10

  • Sorry Jeff, I know this is one of your favorites of the season. I think this is a pretty average beer with a nice smell but the flavor is not all that good.
  • Overall this beer wasn't bad. I'd drink it again but it wasn't something I'd crave.

Total 37/50

December 14

December 14

Revolution Brewing - Fistmas Holiday Ale

6.5% ABV can filled 11/1/17

Aroma 12/12

  • Fruity hop aroma leads, followed by pine, light ginger, and floral earthiness. Sweet bready aromas, like a baked gingerbread cookie.

Appearance 3/3

  • Golden-red, brilliantly clear, with a medium-light tan head that thins and dissipates fairly quickly.

Flavor 18/20

  • Taste of lemon zest, caramel, bread, pine, light ginger.
  • Light floral/pine bitterness on the finish
  • Nice flavor balance and complexity of hop, malt, and spice flavors. Great malt/hop balance and no cloying flavors after the finish.

Mouthfeel 4/5

  • Medium carbonation and body. Smooth, crisp, and lightly sticky mouthfeel is nice. It’s like it sticks around to remind me I want another sip.

Overall Impression 8/10

  • Overall this is a damn nice spiced pale ale style — paler than I would expect for a red ale but it works. All around good balance and complexity of hop, malt, and spice flavors. Very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

December 16

December 16

Anchor Brewing - Our Special Ale 2016

6.5% ABV

Aroma 10/12

  • Dark fruity licorice, chocolate, light coffee

Appearance 2/3

  • Dark brown with a thin brown head. Medium clarity.

Flavor 16/20

  • The taste follows the smell, but has stronger flavors of chocolate and nutty malts. Hints of toffee, and bits of cinnamon and roasted malts.
  • Although there is only a faint amount of bitterness, there are enough underlying hops to mask all but faint amounts of sweetness.

Mouthfeel 3/5

  • Medium thin body. Medium high amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel has a slight amount of smoothness and the finish has a bit of dryness.

Overall Impression 7/10

  • Reminds me of chocolate Coca Cola, slightly creamier, in beer form. Then add licorice, and you’re there.
  • Flavors are good, and relatively unique for an Xmas ale, but if I am craving the licorice flavor I’d prefer a 4 Elf by Dark Horse for its better body.

December 17

December 17

Anchor Brewing - Our Special Ale 2017

6.7% ABV

Aroma 11/12

Comment on malt, hops, esters, and other aromatics

  • It smells of gritty and grainy caramel malt, very little if any seasonal spice, a bit of woodsy char. Some musty hops and some fruity esters.

Appearance 3/3

  • Dark brown with a fluffy brown head. Medium clarity. More lacing on the glass than the '16.

Flavor 18/20

  • Roasty taste lingers into the aftertaste. Bready caramel malt, medium chocolate, no Christmas spice…maybe just a bit of cinnamon but whatever spice is just there in service of the base beer and no more.
  • Faint estery yeast. Weak leafy, weedy, and musky floral hoppiness.

Mouthfeel 5/5

  • Adequate carbonation, medium body, low creaminess. Very smooth though. Fairly dry finish, with warm lingering flavors.

Overall Impression 9/10

Comment on overall drinking pleasure, give suggestions for improvement

  • I don’t get much if any seasonal Christmas spice from this beer. Tastes to me like just a very very solid stout with no fuss. Which is harder to find these days.
