Large Lagering Fridge Now Has a Temp Controller

Thanks to Jim V for donating a temp controller for the large lagering fridge!

It's now programed up to turn on at 36F and turn off at 33F (to alleviate the on/off cycles). The reason why I'm posting about this is because when the controller turns the fridge off, the light inside of it will be off too. Not to worry! It's still working.

Let me know if you have any question about this.

You're welcome.  I was

You're welcome.  I was motivated to buy/donate the temp controller after reading a piece on Charlie Bamforth (Professor Emeritus of Brewing Science at UC-Davis) about cold-aging beer.  His research indicates that for cold-aging beer, temperature is the key factor in ensuring stability and quality.  Time doesn't impact the results nearly as much as temperature - the colder the better, and according to his research, a few degrees made a difference.

Our fridge wasn't getting very cold because we were using the built in temperature settings.  Once, when someone turned it colder (it wasn't me, I swear LOL) the fridge froze.  The temperature controller will allow us to more closely control the temp, and we should be able to consistently keep it in the low 30s.

Thanks for setting it up, Brandon!

Sounds good, Jim.

Sounds good, Jim.

I found the chart below to gauge when beers could freeze. Being that some might lager their Scottish Lights for our upcoming competition (lower range of 2.5% ABV), those beers might freeze ~ 30.2F
(I got the chart from this site). So to play it safe maybe I could set the fridge to 31F - 34F? Would that work?
