The chiller motor is grinding even though there is liquid flowing thru it. I don't know how to fix this or speculate how to fix it. It seems broken. This sucks. We had to switch to the other one.

Chiller
OK, so the immersion chiller is super easy to use. But the other chiller is still broken.
Were you using the thicker side of tubing on a small siphon wand by chance? I did that once and it caused too much air to go through which made the chiller grind until I switched tubes around. Fluid was still moving through it, but seal wasn't quite tight enough and made the motor grind.
Ugh that's the worst Patty. I know that frustration bc this has happened to me before!
+1 to what Jon said. Make sure the thinner tube is connected to the auto siphon. If it's still squealing (which happens), turn off the pump, give the auto siphon a few more pumps, then turn it back on.
If it starts squealing while you're running hot wort through it - turn off the pump, let some wort out through the "primer valve," shut the valve, and turn it back on.
I hope this helps! Keep us posted to any more problems.
It must have been air that was getting in. Just made for a really long night. On a positive note, I’m excited to use the immersion chiller in the winter when the ground water is colder
You guys and your auto-siphons. Maybe I'm becoming Aamish, but that thing is more trouble than its worth. You can literally fill the in-tube with star san, pbw, whatever, and once you have a solid cloumn of water going past the pump you're all set.

Very funny. Anyway, I didn't think it through. How do I plug in the pump? And what am I gonna do with all this beer?
Use a battery and then Rumspringa!
We tried to use the wort chiller today with all the above suggestions and had the motor grinding issue. Anyone brewing tomorrow may want to bring ice for the immersion chiller.
Did you try the Resch old fashioned siphon method? I'll try it tomorrow when I brew and will report back. In any case, should we look into getting a new pump?

I'll see if the replacements parts purchased by Reed sometime back will remedy the situation. Othewise, we'll get a new one.
Thanks for the info!
It's in working order, John was able to get one of the hoses flowing well which was likely the issue. Sorry for the false alarm.
Also, I’m pretty sure the issue is with the impeller - not the pump motor. It wouldn’t surprise me if the level of use, and all the historical grinding has damaged the magnetic impeller which is why it’s so susceptible to the problem now.
I’ve built a few home systems with March pumps. They’ve always been a PITA to prime, which is why I use the “Resch method” of just using a beer glass to fill the input hose with water to prime.
