Hopstravaganza 2019 - Cerveza de Mayo Keezer

For this year’s Cerveza de Mayo party, we’re using the keezer for beers featuring new and/or unusual hop varieties. 

If you’d like to brew for Hopstravaganza 2019, post a reply below - first come,first served.  In your post, please include:

  1. Which hop variety you want
  2. Whether you want four or eight ounces
  3. What style you intend to brew with it (its fine to have multiple examples of the same style)

Rules for the Hopstravaganza 2019 include:

  1. Single hop beers – only use the variety you choose
  2. Brew a style that you think will show off the hop well, or where the hop will fit the style, or accentuate the style’s strengths, or provide an interesting twist on the style - the dual goals are to have a good beer that also shows off the hop variety
  3. By signing up, you are agreeing to be responsible for everything related to your beer, including kegging and carbonating
  4. By signing up, you agree to pay me via Paypal or Quickpay promptly for the hops you use

I’ve ordered two four-ounce packages of each of the hops, but if you only want to use four ounces, that’s fine.  You pay for the four ounces you use, and I’ll keep the other four ounces for future use.  I’ll contact you with my PayPal and QuickPay info.  Please add $1 for shipping costs.    

The Featured Hops:

Experimental Hop #6297

Candied grape, orange, peaches, plums and vanilla cream.  Parentage is Eastern Gold, Apollo, Cascade, USDA 19058m

Alpha Acids: 14.0 – 17.0

Beta:               5.0 – 7.0

CoH:               34 – 37

Cost: four ounces = $6.80, eight ounces = $13.60

Southern Aroma

Southern Aroma is a South African bred aroma, daylight neutral hop whose pedigree is from Saaz and Hallertauer Mettelfreuh.  The aroma profile includes floral, fields of flowers, woody/spicy, and fruity.  A hop with classic noble hop character and a fruity South African terroir backdrop.  Works well with classic European and English styles where traditional noble hops may be used, but also hop forward beers of American and Belgian origins. 

Possible similar hops: Motueka.  

Alpha Acids: 3.6 – 6.1%

Beta Acids: 4 – 6%

Cohumulone: 16 – 22.6%

Cost: four ounces = $8.00, eight ounces = $16.00

ADHA 484

First crossed in 2004, ADHA-484 does not have a name yet. It’s a variety that plays well with others and can be used in a variety of different styles of beers. Although it has fine aroma characteristics, its high alpha acid content also makes it ideal for bittering purposes. Aroma includes cedar; woody; bubblegum; spice and some have reported tropical and citrus. 

Alpha Acid:         10 – 12.2%

Beta Acid:        4.5 – 5.5%

Co-Humulone: 21 – 24%

Cost: four ounces = $3.20, eight ounces = $6.40

Cashmere

Developed by Washington State University, complex and intensely fruity, with strong overtones of lemon, lime, peach, and melon. Secondary notes of coconut, lemongrass, candy, and herbs can show through in whirlpool or dry hop additions. Cashmere really shines when used for aroma and flavor in hop-forward styles, or where the intensity of its exotic tropical notes will complement sour, fruited, or funky ales. Lineage is Cascade and Northern Brewer. 

Alpha Acid Composition          7.7%-9.1%

Beta Acid Composition 3.3%-7.1%

Co-Humulone Composition       22%-24%

Loral

Developed by Hop Breeding Company and released in 2016, Loral™ HBC 291 has a noble heritage that straddles the fence between old and new world hop aromatics. It has the ability to complement all beer styles, making it a very versatile hop in the brewery. Loral™ has been described as pleasant with floral, citrus, peppery and some dark fruit characteristics.  Here is an article on Loral from 2018 https://learn.kegerator.com/loral-hops/   Stone apparently loves this for hop forward beers and has featured it in a single hop IPA.  

Alpha Acid:     10 – 12.2%

Beta Acid:        4.5 – 5.5%

Co-Humulone: 21 – 24%

Tahoma

Tahoma’s lineage is Glacier, but with alpha content higher than its parent, Tahoma features very low cohumulone giving it a subtle, yet lovely lemon citrus aroma and flavor with undertones of orange, woodiness and spice. Alpha Acid Composition 7.2%-8.2%

Beta Acid Composition 8.5%-9.5%

Hops delivery was delayed,

Hops delivery was delayed, because Farmhouse was out of ADHA 484.  They've agreed to sub in a newly released hop from the Hop Breeding Company - the same folks that brought you Citra and Mosaic.  Stay tuned.  Hops should be here by the middle of the coming week.  I'll keep you posted.

Hops have arrived!  I'll drop them off at the brewhouse later today, labeled with your names on them and in the front fridge (by the garage door).  

Farmhouse was out of one variety, so subbed in another new variety from HBC (the folks who brought us Citra and Mosaic).  Definitely an IPA hop and I'll go ahead and do that.  That means the Tahoma hops are available.

Anyone want to brew with them?  In addition to the listed styles below, saison and farmhouse ales sound like a good match, too.  This isn't just open to long time members and brewers - new members/brewers are welcome to participate.

Should Alex Dropkin be switched to Tahoma then? He was going to do the-now-unavailable ADH484 so if Jim is taking the replacement hop, it makes sense for Alex to swap into taking the Tahoma?

The hops are not at the Brewhouse yet, Hugh will bring them tonight, I had to make an unplanned trip to Iowa, Nancy's father is hospitalized.  

For recipe building purposes, here are the actual alpha acid percentages:

Loral (Kevin) 11.6

Southern Aroma (James) 5.6

Cashmere (Jeff) 9.2

Experimental 6297 (Matt) 16.6

Still need a brewer for the Tahoma hops, newish member or brewer is fine, let me know.
