Exploding beers in the ferm room

A rare good post about the ferm room and brewhouse!

1. Brewhouse was very clean when I arrived. Keep up the good work (Joe)!

2. Lots of vigerous fermentations happening. That's a good thing. Lots of krausen exploding everywhere as well...

Jeff x2 - primarys on floor man! Icehouse - duct tape doesn't work. :)   Patty/Adam - cleaned top and airlock.

All of the mess is cleaned up. Just a reminder to use 1" hose and 1 gallon blowoff container where possible. Mike Stuck cleaned my blowoff this weekend, so I'm paying it forward. Y'all do as well.

I went against my better

I went against my better judgment and used the tape. I had to do something because the new plastic carboys that you get from Brew and Grow have a bunghole that is too wide for the bungs that fit into the old Better bottles. I'd be remiss if I didn't caution everyone reading this post about wideness of the new holes.

In any case, I greatly appreciate the rescue and will make sure to use a more appropriate airlock (sans duct tape) next time I use this type of carboy.

Question from a grasshopper -

Question from a grasshopper -

When using the 1", is there anything special to do to secure it?  I realize it is going into the carboy, but what if anything is keeping it in place? Is there a different bung to use? I have only used smaller diameter blowoff tubing from my fermentation lock.

My highest OG beer so far was a 1.057, but I am planning one on the 7th that is going to be more intense with a projected OG of 1.098

Bill, I've become a big fan

Bill, I've become a big fan of the 1" blowoff tube - I hadn't used one until I started brewing at CHAOS a year ago.  Its so damn easy - its a perfect fit inside a standard carboy neck, no bung needed!  Just push the tubing inside the carboy neck and put the other end in a blowoff container and you're good to go.

Hey Matt,

Hey Matt,

At the party clean up yesterday, Mike and I noticed your bucket blew its lid open and spilled out a bit.

I tightened the lid, not sure if anyone cleaned up the mess, bunch of other clean up going on.

Cheers to Vigor ;-)

Hi,

Hi,

Is there anything special causing the vigor and explosions? Just curious why it's happening so often.

Or is this normal?

Years ago the mess of

Years ago the mess of exploding fermentors was bad enough the club decided to keep Fermcap on supply and promote its use.

I think the misuse of sanitizer got the board scared into limiting what we spend, so it was decided members should supply their own Fermcap.

I think the club should provide Fermcap again, this thread spells out the need loud and clear.

Ok, that makes more sense.

Ok, that makes more sense. This was my first beer with out fermcap. I was really surprised it bubbled over since it was a lower OG then my previous beers.
