For those of you who weren't there or haven't heard, Steven and James won us 3rd place with their "Lost Viking" gruit!
For those of you who weren't there, you don't know how big of a flop the homebrew competition was. In 2011, they made a big deal about the homebrew challenge results. They literally stopped the event about 30 minutes before the end of the Saturday afternoon session, got everyone's attention, and announced the winners (and then let everyone go back to drinking for a bit).
This year, however, was extremely aggravating and anticlamactic!
First, Iggy picked up one of the two will call tickets we got for free for entering the homebrew challenge. They told him that we only get one. On the Hoptacular web-site, however, it clearly says "TWO" and so they were shown the website and stood corrected.
Second, they told Evanston homebrew club that the results would be announced around 4:00 p.m. and then they announced the results around 2:45 p.m.
Third, the DJ merely said "Hey, any homebrewers out there?! We're going to announce the results of the homebrew challenge." Immediately after which one of the judges was handed a mic, announced from off-stage the three winners, and then the DJ went right back to spinning the tunes. Before anyone could get to the stage and gather around, the announcement was over.
Fourth (and this one is not confirmed) but I'm not even too sure there were prizes this year. We got a $40 Brew & Grow gift certificate for 2nd place last year; I didn't hear or see anything about prizes this year.
IMHO if they're going to continue to do the Homebrew Challenge, it should be a bigger deal and more official than it was this year.
I was thinking we should contact them about setting up an info table for home brew clubs at next years event. It would make sense to place it next to Brew & Grow's booth. The home brew aspect of the event would be handled better if brew clubs were more integrated into the event.
We should start a friendly push to make this happen next year. For this year, we need to follow up and get the judges notes and see if they can post a web page with results.
That is a freakin' solid idea, Steven. Totally agree.

I just emailed Marty Nachel about obtaining this year's notes and having a shared brew club table next year.
Last year we got the notes in the mail about a week later. I expect the samething next year. Since Jessica was the point of contact, I expect we will be getting it. If we do, I will post it as soon as I can. I hope that the handwriting is a bit more legible this year.
