Stout Night is coming up…I don't know, sooner or later (can't find it on the calendar), and I'd like to brew for it sooner rather than later.
Since I wasn't around for any previous ones: how stout-y are we talking? Is it stout across the board, or are all styles more-or-less represented like at other parties?
Not everything served falls into the stout category. Last year Rusty ran the show are requested that all the beers be dark in color...but Steven is running the show this time around and unsure of what his preference is going to be.
January 24th, 2015 is the official date for Stout Night.
As with everything we do the menu ranges quite a bit...but end of the day please brew something or a style that you want to brew.
Hey, I've been late to announce the call for beers, but I'm confident we'll have a well balanced range of beers. I do not mind have a few golden beers on the list. On the first stout night, people commented that having an IPA or two would be a nice relief.
One of my favorite beer menu categories was "The Helles at the End of the Tunnel".
Needless to say, this is one event people crave barrel age beer like no other time. Smoked beer would be nice as well.
Here's some previous Stout & Chili Night menus:
I was considering adding my recently-brewed “stout” to stout night as a cautionary tale. It was an espresso stout that I had executed well at home as a half-batch. But, at the brewhouse, in my newbie excitement, I forgot to mill my grains (I always did it at the point of purchase.) I knew it was off right away, but it was too late once we figured out the problem.
Working with the guys there, I tried to salvage something and added a ton of sugar to get the ABV up and hopped it up to add character and boiled it down 30%. Today it’s a real beer. It's dark, dry, moderately+ bitter, 4%ABV. Now, I love/hate all my beer in the same way - none of them are perfect and I drink them all anyway - but I can say this one is not horrible.
I think critiquing a fucked-salvaged beer can be fun and educational, but I’m not sure if stout night is the right forum. anyone?
YESSSSS....! This is exactly what we're looking for! Don't worry about it! We've all been there and made some kind of mistakes. The club loves when a "newbie" comes on the scene and puts him/her self out there with a beer they're not so sure on.
Stout night is the perfect venue for it. You're your own worst critic. Put it out there for stout night! Just like with ANY OTHER BEER (advanced brewer or novice brewer) you'll have people who like it and who don't. But, everyone will appreciate the time and effort that went into it!
It's generally pretty refreshing to have a non stout or two on the list, people's palettes start to get bombed out after a lot of heavy, thick, high ABV beers and it's nice to have a bright and refreshing option to spruce up your tongue, we had a few this past stout night and I think it went over very well.
If we're going to serve the non-milled grain stout, we really need to set it apart so people realize that we're using it as a learning experience. Maybe as a side bar to Wood Shop or something.
Jeff, that's more what I had in mind. I don't want it inter-mingled with the better-crafted beers, but I think it could be a interesting learning, conversation piece.

Is this the right venue to let Steven know what I'll be bringing for the Stout Night? My next batch will be a sweet stout using a recipe I've done before http://www.singingboysbrewing.com/sweet-stout.html and I'll bring that for the Stout Night.

There's a Google Docs spreadsheet to track the beers. You can find more info about that in the main Stout Night thread here: http://www.chaosbrewclub.net/forum/announcements/stout-night-january-24th
Thanks, Brock!
