KEG LID CUTOUT JIG AVAILABLE

Brew House Keg Jig

There is a jig available in the Brew house now to help cut out the tops of kegs to convert them into keggles.

You will need:

4.5" angle grinder (There might be one in the BH) - You might have to remove guard.

4.5" cutoff wheels (Harbor Freight has 5/$5) Plan on one wheel per lid.

12" clamps (The ones i used were cheap one from HF and broke so I took them back)

Provided:

"L" jig with pivot (2" hole saw)

Shim for grinder

I attached some pics for reference.  To see Keg to Brew Kettle Conversion video visit:

JIG set up to cut.

Things you need to know:

  • You need to remove valve from keg. See the Keg to Brew Kettle Conversion video link above for a how-to.
  • When grinding do not apply too much downward pressure.  It will cause the cutting wheel to bend.  Let the tool do the work.
  • Should really do this with two(2) people because you have to turn grinder "on" before mounting it to jig, then have someone plug it in while you hold jig for safer operation.
  • Wear gloves and eye protection, probably should wear hearing protection too..
  • Make sure you use at least two(2) clamps to secure grinder to jig. This is important because if the grinder is not secure it will wander and your top will not look good, I can not stress this enough!
  • It should take 3-5 minutes to cut out top.
  • When first starting, go around once to create line to follow.
  • Work blade back and forth

Hope this helps.  Feel Free to contact me if you have any questions.

Does anyone know the diameter

Does anyone know the diameter of the hole cut in the top? Kegs are 16" right? That would make the hole 14"?

There is now a nice set of clamps available for the Keg Jig.

If you use it please... keep all the pieces together so the next person does not have to look for everything.

I cut out two more tops last night and the new clamps worked great.  Do remember though to check them for tightness periodically, especially if you do more than one keg.

Thanks Niilo!  One of the great things (benefits) about clubs such as this one, we can share knowledge, as wel as, share tools that might not be available to everyone. I know I was pretty intimidated about the whole process of cutting the keg lid out...but, all in all..it is pretty easy...especially when you have some help and the right tools...

@ dave - yes the grinding was was pretty screeching last night...
