Hey guys. I was contact by Karen from Lagunitas Brewings about this competition. I've attached it...let me know what you think. We have until the end of January to respond.

Lagunitas Homebrew Competition
Thanks for coming out as well as doing a brew. I agree with you, all the beers were solid. We will do another competition soon. If we do the shoot out format again, I think leaving it anonymous is a great idea.
The final round judging, between clubs, will be tomorrow - Tuesday. CHAOS is hosting the judging and it is not open to the public. However there is an after party and I collected the names of all the people who competed in the first round and have put those names on an RSVP list for Lagunitas. If you can make it out the festivities will start at 4:30. Enter through alley, as usual. .
Niilo's "Awesome" got first place.
Since I had family obligations which did not allow me to attend the Shootout, who had the winning beer?
sorry, i missed that. it's printed.
Steven,
I think I wrote the wrong abv for my beer. It is actually 6.5% not 5.5%. Have you already printed these?

Mark, it's not you, it's me. I forgot to attribute Dan Petrosko to "Bucktown Brown".
This is all from the spreadsheet on Google Docs. Do we really have 13 beers?

I only have one entry, the red menace. I'm not sure how I ended up listing two. My brown ale didn't come out well.
i love the names!
...igz...
summer sunrise is 5.2 abv. you can say something along the lines of its a hazy wheat ale with a light spice attributed to the amarillo hops

Voting ballot will be two sided. Looks like I got everybody, right?
Some of you didn't confirm your ABV, please proof ASAP.
I think it's a great schedule; I would suggest a smaller window of sampling so that we can announce the winner closer to the advertised end time of the event but, if not, no biggie.
I like it. I am getting cups tomorrow...I can get smaller 3 ounce plastic as well as larger ounce for after. We still have punches.
Hey peeps, I'm working on the ballot, which won't be ready till very late Thu or Fri morning. Sorry if the following has been covered, but I have seen anything on how sampling and voting will go down.
I've been to a public vote home brew contest before. They are problematic because many people will only sample half of the beers available before they're wasted and can't even figure out what was what.
One obvious answer to that is to keep the samples very small. How does 2 ounces sound? I think we should make it mandatory that everyone samples each beer. The ballot can also serve as a punch list that verifies you have sampled everything. After every beer has been checked off, people can then have second servings to help figure out which one is the winner (and get their buzz on.)
I'm going to take a stab at making the ballot a rating system worksheet that has people rate each beer on a 1 to 5 scale for Appearance, Smell, Taste, Mouthfeel, and Drinkability. I'll also have space to write a brief note for each category. This begs the question of whether we should turn this into a point based competition, but I think that would be too anal. My main concern is to create a process that slows down drinking and guides people to make a more informed vote.
I was thinking it would be fun to have each brewer make a final pitch to the crowd before we collect final ballots. It would be awesome if we could announce the winner at the event. It shouldn't be too hard to count the ballots. We have advertised 6pm as the end time. I would suggest having people stay for another hour and announce the winner at 7pm.
Timeline:
3:00 - 5:30 sample time
5:30 - 6:00 brewers final plea
6:00 - 6:45 tally votes
6:45 - 7:00 announce winner, shower them in beer
7:05 - if you're staying you're cleaning
How does this sound?
I can get there as early as needed but I prefer not to come before noon.
Also, if anyone is driving and will pass the vicinity of Fullerton and Kedzie, may I have a ride down to the brew house? Maureen has the car that day (as well as Friday) for a work conference out in the 'burbs so that leaves me on CTA with a keg if I can't find a ride.
Dave,
I will be glad to help you set up.
I am also looking for a minimum of 4 people to come an hour early to help setup. Let me know if you are willing.
6 will be in keezer.. The others and bottles will be setup at a table with tub buckets w/ice and picnic taps
How do people plan on serving, we're all not using the keezer, are we? I was thinking of chilling mine nice and cold until Saturday afternoon and then getting one of those chill sleeves to put on my keg when I take it out around 1:00 or 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
We definitely need to make sure we have CO2 for the event, if not beforehand would be nice.
Don't do NFC they are very expensive. Bill always got them filled at Martin Mack Fire Extinguisher. It's in the equipment forum. The prices are listed there too. I think it's $7 to fill a 5# and $12 for a 10#. NFC is $25 minimum for any fill. They are way over priced.

NFC - they have fairly cheap fills and are general homebrew supporters.
we def need to get the tanks filled. Where have we been doing it in the past?
And yes, you don't need to fill a six pack before...but if you want to, you can. You do need to clean and sanitize 6 bottles. No bottles, no fill.
Ill be there at least an hour early so people can bottle their beer with my gun...I'll have my CO2 tank...
I will need a keg with starsan so I can sanatize/clear the beer gun in between fills....

Also, did you mean "serve" with no issue? If people's beers aren't carbed before the event....
No, we don't need to bottle prior. But, the winner will need to pass six bottles on. If you run out of your beer during the three-hour tasting/competition and then you end up winning the vote, you'll have no beer left to pass on.
just to clarify, we dont need to bottle prior to the shootout, right? just serve from keg?
also, do we want to fill the co2 tanks prior so we can all carb with no issue??
...igz...
I'd like to take six off of mine before the competition starts. I'll be there earlier than 3:00 so, whenever you show up, you can show me how to use the beer gun.
Well...I plan on pulling a six pack off prior to the competition...I am bringing my blichmann beer gun so anyone who wants to use it to rack their own beer... can....All you need is your own six pack of bottles and caps....
I show those who want to use it how to....it is pretty simple...
Oh..and I have only about 4.5 gallons too...
Are we going to pull a sixer off of everyone's keg before people start sampling? I ended up with only about 4.5-4.75 gallons and I don't want to run out before I win and need six bottles. ;-)
If you have entered a brew, the 10 event entry fee is waived. FYI
Jake, there's always a fee when you enter a contest for administrative sorts of things. Since this is an "in-house" competition, the $5 entry fee will most likely go to the brew house. The $10 door fee will go toward items such as cups (we anticipate a lot of samples to be had) as well as any labour/items needed for set-up and clean-up.
David, can you put the "entry form" in the actual body of this discussion thread so people (e.g., I) can find it more easily?
10. Now we just need to put the word out...I'd like there to be more than just chaos members. I'd be okay with that though.. The focus of this event is not the same as other events that are fundraisers....beer is the focus for this.
So how many entries do we have for this?
Its good in that there really is no brewpubs on the south side except Flossmore which is way south.
yeah you did...I had to re-format the form to tell who's entry it was.

This event is open to the public...in fact..the public are the judges...They will choose which beer is the best by voting...There is a $10 donation to get into the event....$5 for members to submit their beers for competition...
Interesting spot for a brewpub... that's right by Bev-Art...a homebrew and wine store...
Yeah estimating is fine...its more for the description. This is going to be a hand out that describes each beer and has a section to cast a vote.
Estimating is fine...just put your expected. We can adjust if your entry wins.
Click on the event listing...there is a link in the event description to a form. Simple questions. The info will be presented at the event...like we have done in past events.
You should be fine if you force carb(the slow and low way as oppossed to high and quick). If you'd like to drop off the keg the day before that is an oiption too. I've transported a lot of corny kegs before...foaming usually isn't a big concern. Kicking up sediment (if you have a bunch) sometimes is an issue.
Let me know what you want to do...I'll prob make arrangements for ppl to be able to drop off before the event.
Sign up? Register? I thought we were just all bringing our beer? Where so I sigh up at?
Ed is going to bring a gun... And hopefully there is enough brew left over to bottle a sixer. But your more than welcome to bottle six bottles and set them aside at home as well. If you win..we can make arrangements to get the bottles into the 2nd round judging.
As for your regulator and gas...I would bring it to be safe. We have a keezer that can serve 6 beers at a time...so if that fills up we will be putting cornys on ice in tubs. Having a tank around will probably be very handy.
So far, only two people have officially registered for the event - Daniel and Ed. Although I know of at least 4 other people that said they would be brewing for this comp. So your odds are pretty good. I'm sure more people will sign up as the deadline approaches.
If you'd like to see the brew house and club before the event, we have a meeting this Sunday if you are free.
there will be asimple guide and sheets for all beers entered (generated from the registration form). public will take there favorite and cast a vote. Winner will be sent to second round where their brew will compete against other clubs and judged by local bar owners and folks from the Chicago beer community. (we may be hosting that...at the bh)
Yes I will bring it...
Ed, Are you still willing to bring the beer gun to this event so we can bottle from the keg? I just brewed mine and I don't think I would have enough time to let the 6 pack of bottles bottle condition.

That's a good point. I'm okay with April 14th...
That would be cool...have the public vote...Think it would be fun...I can bring my Blichman beer gun and we can pull out six packs before we tap the kegs...
I still recommend April 14, because this way your beer will be fresher...and Jim can compete ;)
I'll be out of the country from the March 28th to April 8th. As much as people like to bask in my presence while imbibing, however, I'm sure the show can go on without me. ;-)
