Lagunitas Homebrew Competition

Hey guys.  I was contact by Karen from Lagunitas Brewings about this competition.  I've attached it...let me know what you think.  We have until the end of January to respond.

Thanks for coming out as well

Thanks for coming out as well as doing a brew. I agree with you, all the beers were solid. We will do another competition soon. If we do the shoot out format again, I think leaving it anonymous is a great idea.

The final round judging, between clubs, will be tomorrow - Tuesday. CHAOS is hosting the judging and it is not open to the public. However there is an after party and I collected the names of all the people who competed in the first round and have put those names on an RSVP list for Lagunitas. If you can make it out the festivities will start at 4:30. Enter through alley, as usual. .

Steven,

Steven,

I think I wrote the wrong abv for my beer. It is actually 6.5% not 5.5%. Have you already printed these?

Steven Lane said:

Mark, it's not you, it's me. I forgot to attribute Dan Petrosko to "Bucktown Brown".

This is all from the spreadsheet on Google Docs. Do we really have 13 beers?

Mark Walters said:

I only have one entry, the red menace. I'm not sure how I ended up listing two. My brown ale didn't come out well.

I think it's a great schedule

I think it's a great schedule; I would suggest a smaller window of sampling so that we can announce the winner closer to the advertised end time of the event but, if not, no biggie.

Hey peeps, I'm working on the

Hey peeps, I'm working on the ballot, which won't be ready till very late Thu or Fri morning. Sorry if the following has been covered, but I have seen anything on how sampling and voting will go down.

I've been to a public vote home brew contest before. They are problematic because many people will only sample half of the beers available before they're wasted and can't even figure out what was what.

One obvious answer to that is to keep the samples very small. How does 2 ounces sound? I think we should make it mandatory that everyone samples each beer. The ballot can also serve as a punch list that verifies you have sampled everything. After every beer has been checked off, people can then have second servings to help figure out which one is the winner (and get their buzz on.)

I'm going to take a stab at making the ballot a rating system worksheet that has people rate each beer on a 1 to 5 scale for Appearance, Smell, Taste, Mouthfeel, and Drinkability. I'll also have space to write a brief note for each category. This begs the question of whether we should turn this into a point based competition, but I think that would be too anal. My main concern is to create a process that slows down drinking and guides people to make a more informed vote.

I was thinking it would be fun to have each brewer make a final pitch to the crowd before we collect final ballots. It would be awesome if we could announce the winner at the event. It shouldn't be too hard to count the ballots. We have advertised 6pm as the end time. I would suggest having people stay for another hour and announce the winner at 7pm.

Timeline:

3:00 - 5:30  sample time
5:30 - 6:00  brewers final plea
6:00 - 6:45  tally votes
6:45 - 7:00  announce winner, shower them in beer

7:05 - if you're staying you're cleaning

How does this sound?

I can get there as early as needed but I prefer not to come before noon.

Also, if anyone is driving and will pass the vicinity of Fullerton and Kedzie, may I have a ride down to the brew house? Maureen has the car that day (as well as Friday) for a work conference out in the 'burbs so that leaves me on CTA with a keg if I can't find a ride.

How do people plan on serving

How do people plan on serving, we're all not using the keezer, are we? I was thinking of chilling mine nice and cold until Saturday afternoon and then getting one of those chill sleeves to put on my keg when I take it out around 1:00 or 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Don't do NFC they are very expensive. Bill always got them filled at Martin Mack Fire Extinguisher. It's in the equipment forum. The prices are listed there too. I think it's $7 to fill a 5# and $12 for a 10#. NFC is $25 minimum for any fill. They are way over priced.

we def need to get the tanks filled.  Where have we been doing it in the past?

And yes, you don't need to fill a six pack before...but if you want to, you can.  You do need to clean and sanitize 6 bottles.  No bottles, no fill.

No, we don't need to bottle

No, we don't need to bottle prior. But, the winner will need to pass six bottles on. If you run out of your beer during the three-hour tasting/competition and then you end up winning the vote, you'll have no beer left to pass on.

Are we going to pull a sixer off of everyone's keg before people start sampling? I ended up with only about 4.5-4.75 gallons and I don't want to run out before I win and need six bottles. ;-)

Jake, there's always a fee

Jake, there's always a fee when you enter a contest for administrative sorts of things. Since this is an "in-house" competition, the $5 entry fee will most likely go to the brew house. The $10 door fee will go toward items such as cups (we anticipate a lot of samples to be had) as well as any labour/items needed for set-up and clean-up.

You should be fine if you

You should be fine if you force carb(the slow and low way as oppossed to high and quick). If you'd like to drop off the keg the day before that is an oiption too. I've transported a lot of corny kegs before...foaming usually isn't a big concern. Kicking up sediment (if you have a bunch) sometimes is an issue.

Let me know what you want to do...I'll prob make arrangements for ppl to be able to drop off before the event.

Ed is going to bring a gun...

Ed is going to bring a gun... And hopefully there is enough brew left over to bottle a sixer. But your more than welcome to bottle six bottles and set them aside at home as well. If you win..we can make arrangements to get the bottles into the 2nd round judging.

As for your regulator and gas...I would bring it to be safe. We have a keezer that can serve 6 beers at a time...so if that fills up we will be putting cornys on ice in tubs. Having a tank around will probably be very handy.

So far, only two people have officially registered for the event - Daniel and Ed. Although I know of at least 4 other people that said they would be brewing for this comp. So your odds are pretty good. I'm sure more people will sign up as the deadline approaches.

If you'd like to see the brew house and club before the event, we have a meeting this Sunday if you are free.
