So I guess I popped the cherry on this recipe So here arey notes...
I split all grains in half and put them in 2 10 gallon mash tuns. I also split the strike water between the 2 mash tuns.
I hit our targeted mash temp of 150. Because the grain was cooler than the 60 degrees I heated the strike water to 168.
I split the 12.5 gallons of sparge water between both tuns.
I boiled 2 gallons of 1st running to 1 gallon.
I collected way more than 15 gallons of wort! I don't think we need to use 12+ gallons of sparge water...
Because of that I missed the targeted gravity by quite a bit.
I came in at 1.095 not the 1.113 predicted...
That's 18 points below the target...
Kyle, We will definitely be needing to add one or the other...the question is: Chuck and Jeff, did you guys add any DME or Sugar to your boils and if so how much?
I added about 3/4 a cup of LDME to both boils with 15 minutes left. I wasn't sure how high that would take the gravity, so was kind of restrained. Looking back, maybe half a pound of regular DME?
Joe and I each have about 8.5 gallons of beer, my OG: 1.120 and Joes's 1.113.
My recommendations after last night...
Boil down to your numbers and target between 9-10 gallons of wort
Expect a 2 hour boil
Use 3lbs of DME with 15 minutes left
The Decotion mash tastes amazing...after you throw it in the boil hit the pot with cold water and then take your finger and take a swipe at the bottom of the pot for some syrupy goodness.
If you haven't purchased your grain yet, go with Rye Malt over Flaked Rye....I used malt and Joe used flaked and there was a little better rye flavor in my batch.
Make one mash ton mostly specialty grain and the other mostly Marris Otter...decoct the first runnings from the Marris Otter portion.
Use three grain buckets when you are crushing your grain at the mill
This is going to be worth it as the finished wort tasted absolutely amazing and going to pair very well with the barrel!
For those of you who have not brewed yet, are you still interested in brewing and able to do so in the next week or two? If not, let me know as Adam was quite interested if anyone wanted out.
I would like to get this barrel loaded by the end of March.
Lucas - Can you brew right away during your break? If you wait until the end of those two weeks it will be quite a while after ours is done until your batch is ready.
Mark - Are you still in?
Mike - How did yours come out?
We may need an angel share brew created this spring/summer as well to top off the barrel, so there is a potential oppertunity as well. Anyone with thoughts on this?
i brewed last night. i dont quite have the technical accumen of ken, so i just did a straightforward infusion mash. boiled down 2 gal first runnings to 1 gallon, and added that to the rest of the wort. i only boiled for 90 minutes, not quite enough time to do 120. added 2 lbs candi sugar. og 1.097 ~10.5 gal
Brewed this today. Man that is a long brewday. Did a full 2 hour boil, but collected enough initally to still end up with a full 10 gallons. OG was 1.110.
Sorry, I forgot to post here and have been busy. Brewed on Tuesday, so I won't be ready for Sunday but if you guys fill it, I can just add my share when its bottomed out.
I love your ideas, and i am down to give anything a try as long as there isnt anyone super opposed to it.
Chuckmac, I am planning to swing by the open house tomorrow as well, how much do I owe you?
Ken,
I did the first runnings boil thing for a strong scotch ale I did and it came out awesome. Highly recommended for a nice carmelly malt flavor.
-Adam
I'm up for boiling a gallon of first runnings.
Just remember that you need to add .5 gallon additional sparge water to make up the volume you're losing on the first runnings...
Is it a gallon for the entire 10 gallon batch?

Mark, Joe, Kyle, your sacks of Marris Otter are stashed in the dead fridge and 1 sack is in the Lager fridge...
The mashing spread sheet I use only calls for 1.83 gallons of mash out and 3.63 gallons of sparge water per batch....
I got about 7.75 gallons of wort for each batch and both had a 1.094 gravity.
Are people adding DME or sugar to get to their target OG? If not you/we should be.

Jeff..Wait do you have 15.5 gallons of wort ferementing or was that your starting boil?
Starting boil, I have about 5.25 gallons in each fermenting bucket.
I added a pound of Candi sugar to the boil...
Yes, I also added the candy sugar called for in the recipe.
Ken, should I pick up more candy sugar? B&G is on my way home from work. I have the 1lb recipie calls for, but should i grab some more, or some DME?
Joe...we should be fine...I have 2lbs of DME and 2 lbs of sugar that I am bringing tonight.
howd it go last night? how many have yet to brew? im planning on it tomorrow night.
I will let Ken share the details, but all in all i think it went really well.
We both hit above 11 og and it looks/smells/tastes as well as we could hope for.
Last night was a long one.

Brewer List Updates
Anyone else brew yet?

I've got two weeks off the first two weeks of March and had planned on doing it then. That still ok?
Oh... my... god. Why haven't we done this? http://thechive.com/2013/09/17/guys-rig-up-buddies-plumbing-with-beer-wh...
I am brewing mine Saturday.
Kyle - Execellent!
Lucas - Can you brew right away during your break? If you wait until the end of those two weeks it will be quite a while after ours is done until your batch is ready.
Mark - Are you still in?
Mike - How did yours come out?

I should be brewing for it by Sunday.

Thanks for the updates guys
Maybe Adam can do the angel's share?
I got this done last night. OG 1.114 - a little over 8.5 gallons in the fermentor.
Brewed this today. Man that is a long brewday. Did a full 2 hour boil, but collected enough initally to still end up with a full 10 gallons. OG was 1.110.
So we only have 1 person left to brew for this correct? We should start talking about a fill date. We should be able to fill this in 2 or 3 weeks.
I think the fill date will have to be March 22nd...the other barrel empty & fill is on the 15th.
has anyone checked on their brew yet?
Of the people that bought a special sack for this - you owe the club paypal $47 for the sack. Thanks!
I sent my payment for the Maris Otter sack to the clubs paypal yesterday.
What is the paypal addr?

Hey Lucas, Any update on when you are going to get your brew in?
Thanks!
We should plan a fill date now.
Do you think we have enough beer between the 7 of us to fill it for now and then top it off when Lucas is done?
We probably do.
Racked my beer last night F.G. is at 1.016. If I did my math right I came in at around 10.5% abv.
How about Sunday afternoon?
Sorry, I forgot to post here and have been busy. Brewed on Tuesday, so I won't be ready for Sunday but if you guys fill it, I can just add my share when its bottomed out.

How about barreling up on the 23rd?
Works for me, I plan to brew that day.
Yup - fine with me.
I transferred to secondary today and had a gravity of 1.022. Tasted great!
