Ken,

Ken,

I did the first runnings boil thing for a strong scotch ale I did and it came out awesome. Highly recommended for a nice carmelly malt flavor.

Just remember that you need

Just remember that you need to add .5 gallon additional sparge water to make up the volume you're losing on the first runnings...

So I guess I popped the

So I guess I popped the cherry on this recipe So here arey notes...
I split all grains in half and put them in 2 10 gallon mash tuns. I also split the strike water between the 2 mash tuns.
I hit our targeted mash temp of 150. Because the grain was cooler than the 60 degrees I heated the strike water to 168.
I split the 12.5 gallons of sparge water between both tuns.
I boiled 2 gallons of 1st running to 1 gallon.
I collected way more than 15 gallons of wort! I don't think we need to use 12+ gallons of sparge water...
Because of that I missed the targeted gravity by quite a bit.
I came in at 1.095 not the 1.113 predicted...
That's 18 points below the target...

I added about 3/4 a cup of LDME to both boils with 15 minutes left.  I wasn't sure how high that would take the gravity, so was kind of restrained.  Looking back, maybe half a pound of regular DME?

Last night was a long one.

Last night was a long one.

Joe and I each have about 8.5 gallons of beer, my OG: 1.120 and Joes's 1.113.

My recommendations after last night...

  1. Boil down to your numbers and target between 9-10 gallons of wort
  2. Expect a 2 hour boil
  3. Use 3lbs of DME with 15 minutes left
  4. The Decotion mash tastes amazing...after you throw it in the boil hit the pot with cold water and then take your finger and take a swipe at the bottom of the pot for some syrupy goodness.
  5. If you haven't purchased your grain yet, go with Rye Malt over Flaked Rye....I used malt and Joe used flaked and there was a little better rye flavor in my batch.
  6. Make one mash ton mostly specialty grain and the other mostly Marris Otter...decoct the first runnings from the Marris Otter portion.
  7. Use three grain buckets when you are crushing your grain at the mill

This is going to be worth it as the finished wort tasted absolutely amazing and going to pair very well with the barrel!

Kyle - Execellent!

Kyle - Execellent!

Lucas - Can you brew right away during your break?  If you wait until the end of those two weeks it will be quite a while after ours is done until your batch is ready.

Mark - Are you still in?

Mike - How did yours come out?

We may need an angel share brew created this spring/summer as well to top off the barrel, so there is a potential oppertunity as well.  Anyone with thoughts on this?

i brewed last night.  i dont quite have the technical accumen of ken, so i just did a straightforward infusion mash.  boiled down 2 gal first runnings to 1 gallon, and added that to the rest of the wort.  i only boiled for 90 minutes, not quite enough time to do 120.  added 2 lbs candi sugar.  og 1.097  ~10.5 gal
